Background information[]
In the article "DISCOVERY's 'Battle of the Binary Stars' Armada Identified" by Ken Reilly at TrekCore, this class was "Named for US Air Force fighter pilotBob Hoover, who escaped Nazi captivity in a stolen plane, tested supersonic jets, and has been considered by many to be one of the greatest aviators in history."[1]

TheHoover class was identified via theEdison by designerJohn Eaves.[2] Eaves also named the class, which was later confirmed[3] after being revealed onStarTrek.com.[4](X)
Eaglemoss Collections released the USSEdisondisplay model as part of theirStar Trek: Discovery The Official Starships Collection model/magazine combopartwork publication on30 May2019, featuring input from designer John Eaves, and listing the ship as 356.3 meters in length. The article was republished as part ofStar Trek: Discovery Designing Starships inSeptember 2019.
TheHoover-class appears in the25th century-set gameStar Trek Online, as a cosmetic "skin" for the playableEdison-class (β) starship, and has as such likewise been released by Eaglemoss in their non-canonStar Trek Online Starships Collection sister partwork publication in August 2021.
In both instances it wasFabio Passaro'sMeshweaver Productions that provided the CGI model conversions from the original production software packages (Autodesk Maya inDiscovery's case), intoLightWave 3D, Eaglemoss' software package of choice, to make the models suitable for both print publications, as well as for turning them into theCAD files needed as templates for the display model manufacturing.[5][6][7]
In 2023, the up-until-then apocryphalEdison-class itself became theEdison-class in canon with itsStar Trek: Picardthird season appearances.
