Moss wasborn in Chicago, Illinois, but moved with his family to California in the 1960s. He attend grammar and high school in Eagle Rock in Los Angeles and became part-time set painter for Universal Studios while he was in college, where he sought a degree in marine biology. He ultimately left college to start his own prop company.
