TheEdison-class was a type ofFederationstarship operated byStarfleet during the early25th century. It bore a strong resemblance to the23rd centuryHoover-class but featured components and technology from more recent designs.

Twenty-two ships of this class participated inFrontier Day celebrations nearSol Station. Along with the rest of the fleet, these ships were seized by theBorg Collective after their younger crews wereassimilated by aBorg signal transmitted viaJack Crusher. (PIC: "Vox", "The Last Generation")

Before its April 2023 onscreen appearance, theEdison-class (β) had already debuted in July2019 in the25th century-set gameStar Trek Online, constructed by the game's starship designerHector Ortiz as a cosmetic "skin" of the23rd centuryHoover-class starship, which had been designed byJohn Eaves, and named for theHoover-classUSSEdison which appeared inDIS: "Battle at the Binary Stars".[3] It wasOnline mainstayTobias Richter who constructed theCGI model for in-game use – as he had previously done with theHoover-class as well, incidentally. (Star Trek Online Starships Collection, issue 17, p. 13) As such the hitherto apocryphal class had received its own outing in Eaglemoss' non-canonStar Trek Online Starships Collectionpartwork publication in August 2021. Eaves' originating design had already received its outing in Eaglemoss'Star Trek: Discovery The Official Starships Collection sister publication in July 2019.

In both instances it wasFabio Passaro'sMeshweaver Productions that provided the CGI model conversions from the original production software packages (Autodesk Maya inDiscovery's case), intoLightWave 3D, Eaglemoss' software package of choice, to make the models suitable for both print publications, as well as for turning them into theCAD files needed as templates for the display model manufacturing.[4][5][6]

It was not Passaro's model however, that was selected for the transition into onscreencanon, but rather Richter's game version. His version was most likely chosen over that of Passaro as a courtesy to game developerCryptic Studios, which had contributed their digital files for the bulk of the Starfleet models seen in thePicardseason two andthree episodes. The model was subsequently turned over to the franchise's ownvisual effects (VFX) department ofPicard, where the additional necessary changes were made under the auspices of VFX SupervisorJason Zimmerman and VFX Production ManagerShawn Ewashko to make the model ready for its onscreen use while keeping the in-game livery the model came with.

Apocrypha[]

Star Trek Online has given an in-universe explanation why the 23rd centuryHoover-class and 25th centuryEdison-classes resembled each other so much. See:here
