Conscription
Conscription, or beingdrafted, was the act offorcing someone toenlist in amilitary, often without theirconsent.
Anewspaperarticle published in1930 quotedAmericanmotorists withoutlicense plates as saying "I'm going to be drafted nextmonth and don't want to spend$15 or $20." (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")
Starfleet regulation 13982 allowed a Starfleet captain to conscript almost any person into service during a time of war. The mirrorGabriel Lorca, pretending to be the primeLorca, cited this regulation when bringing convictedmutineerMichael Burnham onto theUSSDiscovery in2256. (DIS: "Choose Your Pain")
In the2270s, an upsetDoctorLeonard McCoy protested his reinstatement under thereserve activation clause, clarifying "in simplerlanguage,Captain, they drafted me!" (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
In2373,Neelix askedKathryn Janeway's permission to accompany arescue team that was trying to locateKes, giving hiscombat training and willingness to make the mission a success as reasons why he ought to go. She agreed, saying "Consider yourself drafted." (VOY: "Warlord")
