Terminology[]
In theFerengi language, DaiMon translated to "captain"; the position was also the equivalent that of acaptain. (ENT: "Acquisition";TNG: "The Battle";PRO: "First Con-tact")
It was observed, on occasion, that DaiMons in command of a starship were referred to as "leader" by members of their crew. (TNG: "Peak Performance")
In2366,BetazoidAmbassadorLwaxana Troi, angrily referred to an unwanted Ferengi pursuer as "DemonTog, or whatever you call yourself." (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
Duties[]

DaiMons were authorized to explore new trade opportunities on behalf of the Alliance, and were often empowered to speak on behalf of the Alliance in such matters. (TNG: "The Last Outpost", "The Price") Their duties included reporting to theFerengi Council. (TNG: "Force of Nature")
According toanother DaiMon, the reason why he was DaiMon ofhis ship was because he "[took] charge of every situation." (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
The primary agenda of the DaiMon was to earn aprofit. (TNG: "The Last Outpost", "The Battle") In fact, according toDoctorFarek, "a true DaiMon would not be blinded bylust," during their pursuit of profit. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
A DaiMon also had the ability to declare any capturedstarship to be "a loss and open to claim according to theFerengi Salvage Code." (TNG: "The Battle", "Rascals")
According toone Ferengifirst officer, "it is not seemly to question one's own DaiMon" without just cause. (TNG: "The Battle")
Stipulations[]
DaiMons were, however, held under strict guidelines in maintaining their command post by theFerengi government, who had the power to assign or strip anofficer of their command.
The simple misdeed of engaging in an unprofitable venture could lead to them being stripped of their command. Revenge was highly frowned upon, and evidence of one being unstable and dangerous, could result inprison time. (TNG: "The Battle", "Bloodlines")
As could a severesecurity breach, such as revealing theircommand codes that would lead to complete access to the ship'scomputer. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
In 2366,FederationstarshipCaptainJean-Luc Picard threatened to report DaiMon Tog forkidnapping a Federation ambassador and twoStarfleetofficers to his superiors, indicating that those superiors "may question your competency as DaiMon." (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
A non-Alliance affiliated group ofprivateers, led by anindividual who still possessed the rank of DaiMon, were in business for themselves when they captured theUSSEnterprise in2369, hoping to sell it to theRomulans. Upon their failure, and due to their involvement in acriminal activity, their actions were quickly disavowed by the Ferengi government. (TNG: "Rascals")
