This planet was only mentioned in writing.
The reference to this planet, as well as the wording of severalokudagrams, was anin-joke. Alderaan was the adoptedhomeworld ofStar Wars'Princess Leia, who claimed to be on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan when captured byDarth Vader in the opening scene ofStar Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and the planet ended up being destroyed by the Death Star's superlaser.

Thename of this planet originally also appeared in "Up The Long Ladder", on an okudagram onPicard'sdesktop monitor as the destination ofHMSNew Zealand in2135. A legible version of the original okudagram appeared in thereference book,Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission. In the remastered version of the episode, the planet was renamed toAldebaran.
In thereference bookStar Trek Chronology, in the "A" section of the locations index, this planet was listed as "Never visited by thecrew of theUSSEnterprise-D."
