TheX-Hunters, known asCounter Hunters (カウンターハンター,Kauntā Hantā) in Japan, is a group of threeMavericks who serve as the main antagonists ofMega Man X2. Led bySerges, this unit was formed in retaliation to counterX and theMaverick Hunters.[1]

Description[]

Mega Man X2[]

AfterSigma's defeat, the X-Hunters took control of his rebellion's remnants and began working to resurrect him.[2] They also recoveredZero'sparts, planning to upgrade his body and revive him as a Maverick, and began mass production of new Mavericks to support their new rebellion. In a period of two weeks, their forces retired over one hundred Maverick Hunters.[3]

Once two of the eight Maverick bosses are destroyed, the X-Hunters personally contactHunter Base, each challenging X to duels. They then randomly appear in hidden rooms in any of the six remaining stages. Upon defeating an X-Hunter, X recovers one of Zero's three parts. They also appear as bosses in the finalX-Hunter Stages. Upon the death of their final member,Agile, the resurrected Sigma reveals himself to X.

χ -kai-[]

Mega Man X DiVE Hunter Program χ -kai-

χ -kai- is a new X-Hunter designed byKeisuke Mizuno, made into aTruForce Collectibles figure forNew York Comic Con 2015.

Keisuke Mizuno, an illustrator from Capcom, created a design for a fourth member of the X-Hunters known asχ -kai-, a doppelganger of X. He was later produced as an exclusive figure byTruForce Collectibles for NYCC 2015, which described him as the newly-assigned leader of the X-Hunters thanks to Serges completing his design. Mizuno stated that he made χ -kai- because he was "amazed that Capcom didn't make a villain that looked exactly like Mega Man X." However, it could be argued that he ignored the existence ofiX fromRockman X Mega Mission, although that series was released by Bandai instead of Capcom.

Production Notes[]

Developer Comments
"When figuring out the limits of theCX4, a female X-Hunter was removed from what were called the 'Four Guardians' at the time. Violen also lost his second form. We just didn't have the resources to make that all happen." -Yoshihisa Tsuda[5]

WorldsUnite XHunters

The X-Hunters are destroyed by a Gore Magala.

The X-Hunters appeared together in theWorlds Unite crossover event, as three of many Mavericks recreated bySigma-1. After attacking theSky Patrol, they and most of their comrades departed for other worlds. They invaded the world ofMonster Hunter, but were brought down by the inhabitants,X, andSticks the Badger. Based on dialogue from X and the X-Hunters, their previous encounter had been enough of a challenge that X was horrified that Sigma brought them back, and that apparently, Zero had been involved somehow in stopping them.

Trivia[]

  • All three X-Hunters make brief cameo appearances during the opening cutscenes ofMega Man X3 (Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and PC versions) andMega Man X5.
  • The part of Zero that each X-Hunter holds is directly correlated with their character trait: Serges holds Zero's head (representing wisdom and ego), Agile holds Zero's pelvis and legs (representing speed and movement), Violen wields his chest and arms (representing power and bravery).
  • The X-Hunters were originally planned to have four members inMega Man X2, including a female Maverick, but she was cut during production to save storage on the game cartridge.χ -kai- is a nod to this lost concept. The same goes for Violen's second form from the X-Hunter Stages, which was similarly scrapped to manage resources.[5]
