Synopsis for "Paradise Lost"

Kang's recollections of a half dozen of his encounters with various heroes from 20th century Earth.

Notes

  • This issue's indicia reads "The Mighty Thor Annual Vol 1".
  • This is part 2 of theCitizen Kang event, followingCaptain America Annual #11 and and continuing directly intoFantastic Four Annual #25.
  • Similarly, the fourth story is the second part of Kang's chronicle of his life, something that he was shown beginning to record inChronopolis in that Captain America Annual. However, since it was later established that Kang had stopped recording that chronicle just before the events of the Citizen Kang storyline, the opening and closing scenes that show Kang kneeling near the preserved body of Ravonna must be something that occurred well before he started that recording and in his citadel on his conquered Earth.
  • Kang's account of how he defeated Merlin in Camelot[1] does not mention the fact that that "Merlin" was actually anevil mutant who was briefly impersonating the trueMerlin, as revealed by theTerminatrix inAvengers Annual #22. So, either Kang was not aware of the impersonation or he was lying in his own chronicles.
  • Kang's suspicion that the Watcher who enlisted the Human Torch and the Thing to oppose his conquest of Camelot might have be an agent of Immortus was baseless since that action was one of Uatu's violations of the non-interference code of the Watchers that was mentioned inCaptain Marvel #39.
  • InAvengers #269, Kang told some captive Avengers that the Infinity Vortex that Thor had used against his camouflagedtime-sphere[2] had obliterated his vehicle and sent him intoLimbo for the first time, an event that was substantiated by Kang's autobiography inAvengers: Forever #9. However, in this story Kang claims that he and his timeship were unaffected because they were already on their way back to his 41st century Earth. There would seem to be three ways by which this contradiction could be explained:
    • One of Kang's claims is a lie.
    • These accounts are actually from two different Kangs who had similar encounters with two different Thors that ended differently in two different timelines.
    • Thor's use of the Infinity Vortex against Kang's Time-ship actually caused the single Kang he had battled to undergo a divergence into two different Kangs, one who went to Limbo and another who just returned safely to his 41st century empire.
  • As revealed by Kang's autobiography tapes inAvengers: Forever #9, four different Kangs were responsible for the building of Chronopolis, the brief conquest of Camelot, the contest with the Grandmaster and the creation of theCouncil of Kangs. However, this Kang claims to have both conquered Camelot and played that game with the Grandmaster. This is presumably due to the fact that Immortus had previously tricked one Kang into unintentionally downloading the life memories of all other Kangs into his mind inAvengers #269.
