—Oblivion[source]It is my most fervent hope--thatit diestoday. Now don't thinkbadly of me: I can'thelp but wish for the end of all things. It's in mynature, my veryidentity, for my name...tosome, at least--is Oblivion. Before creation was...I was. Where creation ends...Iwait. I am theVoid. The breathbetween life and death. Between death and rebirth. Thenothing--from which theeverything springs. Thisform you see, thisthrone I sit upon--areillusions...created foryour benefit, not mine. For if you looked upon me as Itruly am--you wouldcease to exist. A state of affairs that would pleaseme no end.
Oblivion is anabstractcosmic entity that predates theMultiverse and represents non-existence.[8][5] In theSeventh Cosmos, he was coupled withDeath as her progenitor[5] and/or sibling.[9][10] He was opposed byInfinity andEternity.[9][11][12] In theEighth Cosmos, Oblivion's counterpart is theLiving Tribunal, with thePreordained as their go-between.[13][14]
History
Origin[]

Embodying theprimordial void that theMultiverse sprang from and will eventually return to,[8][7] Oblivion was considered by theOne Above All to be his first son.[15] Oblivion claimed to have watched the universe get born, struggle for life, die, and thenbe reborn multiple times.[16] Although other primordialabstracts likeEternity,Infinity, andDeath came into being with the Big Bang when the universe was created,[17] Oblivion saw them as siblings and had a very close relationship with Death,[9] whom he was purportedly considered her progenitor[5] and/or "twin" in a similar manner as Eternity and Infinity.[9][10] Sometimes, he represented death,[11] or rather the "true death," "the doom beyond mere death," as in removed from existence.[6] Like Eternity and Death, Oblivion had a strong rivalry with Infinity, a rivalry usually fought through avatars.[9][12] Oblivion usually resided inside a pocket dimension known as theOuter Void.[5] Eternity also sent his avatars to fight Oblivion in trials overseen by theLiving Tribunal within theDimension of Manifestations. Oblivion won every trial and claimed Eternity's champions' skulls for his belt. For the 13th trial, Oblivion beheadedEternal Maddniss, and as a result, the Living Tribunal fulfilled Oblivion's request to have Eternity house Death.[10]
One of Oblivion's principal avatars was theChaos King, an offshoot of Oblivion serving as the embodiment of the primordial Void before the seventh iteration of the universe began. The Chaos King was weakened and integrated into theAmatsu-Kami, becoming known asAmatsu-Mikaboshi.[18][19][7]
Mirage[]

Welcoming Iceman
Loneliness caused Oblivion to create his kingdom, servants, and a daughter known asMirage, who ran away from home and assumed the human form of Marge Smith. Oblivion sent his minionsWhite Light, theIdiot, andKali after her but were thwarted by the mutantIceman. A paradox caused Iceman to cease to exist and enter Oblivion's realm; Oblivion tasked the young man to bring back his daughter. Bobby and Mirage returned with vengeance but she willingly accepted him after she realized she was a byproduct of him craving love. Although Oblivion tried to destroy Bobby, Bobby refused to be destroyed and Oblivion gained a new understanding of love. Soon afterward, Oblivion and Mirage merged back into a single being.[20]
Quasar[]

Battling Infinity
In his rivalry with Infinity, Oblivion empoweredMaelstrom as his avatar and sent him his agent,Deathurge, to assist him. As Oblivion's agent, Maelstrom tried to destroy the whole universe, but he was stopped byQuasar, the avatar of Infinity. Oblivion, Infinity, Death, and Eternity then came to a new agreement.[21]
Quasar encountered Oblivion again in theDimension of Manifestations after beingnullified. Quasar was able to escape thanks to his personal Death avatar.[22]
Lurking in the Void[]
Maelstrom returned to life later and came into conflict with theGreat Lakes Avengers. During this conflict,Deathurge was sent repeatedly to collect the souls of Great Lakes Avengers who died. When he tried to claim the soul ofSquirrel Girl's sidekickMonkey Joe,Mr. Immortal used the opportunity to grab Deathurge, now just the size and shape of a squirrel, and defeat him. The recently deceasedDoorman encountered Oblivion, who made him his new agent, telling him that Deathurge had failed him.[23] At Christmas, Deathurge tried to regain his position, but failed the test Oblivion gave him.[4]
Following the Chaos King's failed attempt to return reality to the Void, Oblivion observed a battle betweenGalactus, theScrier, and theOther in the hopes that it would annihilate the Multiverse. When this failed to come to pass, Oblivion commented on the ephemeral nature of existence and implied he had instigated the conflict as part of one of his endless gambits to annihilate all existence.[7]
Rebirth of the Eighth Cosmos[]
In wake of the reconstruction of the Multiverse following theincursion crisis,[24] Oblivion's cosmic role was reimagined as part of a new system of hierarchies due to the influence ofReed Richards' role in theEighth Cosmos' creation,[14] and so Oblivion's cosmic rival became the recently appointedLiving Tribunal.[13] Though Oblivion and the Tribunal shared a deep resentment of each other, they were willing to collaborate on certain matters, such as apprehendingKorvac.[25]
G.O.D.S.[]

Oblivion's human form

Oblivion's serpent form
Following a Babylon Event fromCubisk Core,[26] Oblivion entered theLibrary of Worlds where he metDimitri Krakov andMia DiMaria at a bar.[27] Mia had been recruited due toThe-Natural-Order-of-Things seeing the hand of Oblivion and ordering the greatly weakenedCentum to gather strength.[28] Despite Oblivion's human form, Dimitri instantly recognized him. Dimitri'sThing-of-Order noted Oblivion's growing number of disciples: 22,351 and counting. Meanwhile, the lastCassandra (Amelia Addison) had been having nightmares about Oblivion for five years and entered the Library of Worlds to stopRobert Forson from using a mysterious artifact to cause the apocalypse. Her assassination of Forson failed, butWyn andDoctor Strange thwarted Forson. Displeased, Oblivion declared to Wyn that he had made an enemy that day.[29]
WhenAiko Maki visited the eternal pillars and the great rock in order to see theLiving Tribunal, she was brought to both Oblivion and the Tribunal by thePreordained, their servant. Oblivion faintly recognized her from the Library of Worlds incident, which Aiko confirmed. Aiko requested the Tribunal to free Mia from The-Natural-Order-of-Things, as it was limiting her magical potential, but the Tribunal refused. To Aiko's horror, Oblivion claimed Mia for himself.[13]

Powers
Near-Omnipotence: Oblivion is a cosmic and also a virtually omnipotent entity representing the inevitable ending of all things, oblivion itself. Despite representing non-existence, he can create to appease his loneliness, including his realm, servants, anddaughter.[8] He has temporal powers but not without limit.[16] Oblivion can empower agents or avatars with different amounts of power to act in his name.[9] Oblivion can bring people back from non-existence, but he cannot pull people back from Death.[31] Oblivion is said to be the most powerful out ofEternity,Infinity,Death, and himself.[2] Yet, like allabstract entities, he remains subject to theLiving Tribunal's judgment and authority.[10]
Possession: If a person is missing a portion of their soul, Oblivion can take control of them, but his possession is broken if the person's soul is restored.[6]
Existence Erasure: Oblivion can remove people from existence with a mere touch.[6] However, in practice, this removes them from theMultiverse, sending them to theOutside.[32]Weaknesses
According toDeathurge, Oblivion can be destroyed.[33] WhenIceman knocked Oblivion down,Mirage momentarily thought that Iceman had slain her father.[16]Maelstrom believed that he could usurp Oblivion; after Maelstrom was defeated byInfinity andQuasar, Infinity told Oblivion that Maelstrom would have succeeded in supplanting him and Oblivion was too short-sighted to notice.[9]
Oblivion attempted to erase Iceman but failed. After learning about "love" from him, Oblivion "glimpsed a power that transcends and empowers both Oblivion and [...] reality."[16]Notes

Oblivion's redesign and human form
- ForG.O.D.S., Oblivion received a redesign and a human form.
- For other redesigns, clickhere.
- As perDefenders (Vol. 6) #5, theAnti-All is also described to be primordial Void itself.Doctor Strange theorized that the fragments of the Anti-All spread across theMultiverse from theThird Cosmos and became incarnations of the "great Nothing", withFree Comic Book Day 2024: Ultimate Universe/Spider-Man #1 andImmortal Thor #12 confirming theKing in Black andRøkkva to be two such offshoots. Oblivion's relation to the Anti-All is unknown, though his offshoot the Chaos King personifiesthe primordial cosmic void between the Sixth and Seventh Cosmoses, which both the King in BlackKnull and the Røkkva were said to have originated from, and from which Knull created the symbiotes.[19][7][34]
- According toOfficial Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #8, when theIn-Betweener summonsDeath to claim severalElders of the Universe,[35] it is actually Oblivion disguised as Death.
- According toJ.M. DeMatteis, theCreator contains everything, even Oblivion.[36] The One Above All refers to Oblivion as his "first son."[15]
- Annihilus is said to be the first-born son of Oblivion, but it is not clear if this is referring to the cosmic being.[37]
