Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was in truth a Leviathan agent before her time inS.H.I.E.L.D. By infiltrating theHigh Council of Hydra, she stole the box from Hydra and the Brood power source inside, allowing Leviathan to be revived in the present.[3] This ignited a three-way war between Hydra, Leviathan, andNick Fury,[4] in which Leviathan was effectively wiped out because Fury had sabotaged their chambers, causing the revived Leviathan agents to self-destruct after a few months. Defeated, Contessa left Leviathan.[5]
History
Origin[]
Leviathan originated in theCold War. While theUnion of Soviet Socialist Republics had 100,000 case officers and covert operatives employed at its height, that was in truth only the front side of its spy operation. Leviathan was equally as large, equally as funded, and twice as dangerous.[6] The three heads of Leviathan wereOrion,Magadan, and the triple agentContessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine,[7] who would later be recruited byS.H.I.E.L.D., but her true allegiance was Leviathan.[3]
Great Wheel[]
Orion and Magadan were contacted by theBrotherhood of the Shield and was brought to theImmortal City to meet withLeonardo da Vinci inPieta. Along with other intelligence agents from around the globe—Jake Fury,John Garrett,Shoji Soma,Cornelius van Lunt,Nick Fury,Baron Strucker,Dum Dum Dugan,Thomas Davidson, and theKraken—they formed theGreat Wheel. Each member was assigned a codename from the zodiac, Orion being Cancer and Magadan being Capricorn. Leonardo da Vinci was the leader as Aries, sent the rest of the Wheel on three key retrieval missions, and promised them resources that would be of great value to their own separate agendas. Magadan took part in an operation along with John Garrett, Kraken and Shoji Soma to infiltrate an ancientBrood vessel inGiza,Egypt and acquired its power source. Magadan and Orion betrayed the Great Wheel and stole the technology their missions had acquired. The combination of the Brood power source with stasis pods Orion had acquired allowed for the creation of a superhuman.[8]
Magadan underwent the process, and they set up thechambers for the rest of Leviathan, but their installation was attacked by Hydra. When Baron Strucker severely wounded Orion, Magadan rushed him into stasis to save his life, but the superhuman process could not be carried out after Hydra had stolen the Brood power source. Magadan attempted to retrieve the power source in order to revive Orion, even going so far as to kill Shoji Soma. However, where Soma hid the power source could not be determined. After this, Leviathan went dark for many years while Magadan searched for the power source.[2]
Return[]
Though most of Leviathan was in stasis in the facility known as theLong Winter,[6] remnants of it remained active in the shadows.[9][10][6] Under the guise of the Kraken,Jake Fury alerted Leviathan the location of the Brood power source.[11] Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine took on the mantle of Madame Hydra and infiltrated theHigh Council of Hydra in order to acquire the box. At the same time, Leviathan made their move on Hydra, capturing and killing theViper before awakening Orion and the rest of Leviathan.[12]
