—Never Queen[source]Welcome to the space outside of time, and the time outside of space. I am theNever Queen, theembodiment of allpossibility, and this is my home. From here, I give birth to every moment thatcould be. Then intoyour worlds they flow, where you, the creatures offree will, decide which of themshould be.
TheLand of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be is a plane of non-existenceoutside of theMultiverse.[5][1] Sometimes described as an "abyss" where nothing happens,[7] it has served as the base of operations forGlorian and his nefarious schemes.[5][1] However, the other side of nowhere is everywhere; the "abyss" is also the "mountaintop" where all is visible. ThisLand of Can-Be-Shall-Be is a plane of unchecked possibility,[4] where theQueen of Nevers can see all.[8] If anexus being dies, they have the option to come here with the Never Queen.[9]
History
Queen of Nevers[]
When theFourth Cosmos ended, the Sentience of the Fourth Cosmos, known as thePilgrim, journeyed into theMystery.[10] Taking on a new role, the Pilgrim transitioned into the Queen of Nevers,[4] and she became the Mistress of the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be.[11]

Stealing the Queen's heart
Incredulous Zed[]
During a romantic moment betweenEternity and theQueen of Nevers,Incredulous Zed used theEdge of Reality, a sword which could cut through reality itself, to infiltrate the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be and steal the Never Queen's heart, all in order to build theImpericon with it. After the heart was recovered with the help ofDawn Greenwood and theSilver Surfer, Eternity expelled Zed from within himself for his crime. In the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be, Zed was enslaved by his mysterious benefactor,[12]Glorian, the Maker of Miracles.[1]

Secret Wars[]
When theMultiverse began to fade away as a consequence of the lastincursion, the Queen of Nevers alerted Dawn and the Surfer about the impending end before ceasing to exist, buying them enough time to escape to the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be. There, Glorian and Incredulous Zed (under the guise of the Lowly Zee) convinced the couple to recreate the old universe using the energy of Glorian's master, theShaper of Worlds.[1]

Choosing Eternity over Glorian
The task eventually depleted the Shaper's power and Glorian took advantage of this to slay him, usurping his position in the process. Dawn and the Surfer then found the Never Queen's heart and used it to bring her back, making it possible for them to choose the reborn Earth-616 over Glorian's duplicated universe, seemingly resulting in his death.[13]
Around the same time,Loki and the ghost ofVerity Willis also avoided the erasure of their universe by going to the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be, albeit a different part of it.Those Who Sit Above in Shadow confronted the duo there, but Loki frightened them away by menacing to reveal their possible true origin. He subsequently reconciled withhis alternate future self before moving on to what was next.[14]
Eternity War[]
For having perished outside reality, the Shaper of Worlds was able to seethe incarnations of previous Multiverses alive in theFar Shore. Since they were supposed to be dead after going through a renewal cycle (process in which aMultiverse dies and is replaced with a new one), the Shaper's ghost soughtGalactus to warn him about their survival.[15][3]

Return of the Celestials!
Later, the Queen of Nevers rescued theOne Above All fromLogos while he slaughtered the fewCelestials who managed to survive theBeyonders for his master, theFirst Firmament.[16] From the safety of the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be, the Never Queen kick-started the rebirth of the Celestials through the One Above All to helpMulti-Eternity against the First Firmament.[3]
Defenders[]
In their journey into the "Mystery" beyond the Multiverse, theDefenders entered the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be, the "Abyss," after leaving theWhite Hot Room.[2] They encountered a still-aliveGlorian, who used pieces of himself to trap the Defenders in a "maybe-verse" of their fantasies. However, the Defenders broke free andLoki used theEternity Mask to call upon the Queen of Nevers. The Queen revealed herself to be Pilgrim, the Sentience of theFourth Cosmos, and was joined withCloud. The Queen brought the Defenders to the door to theHouse of Ideas and left Glorian in the abyss.[4]
Thunder War[]
After the return of the first Storm God,Hadad, he attacked the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be with theBlack Winters under his control, urging the Queen of Nevers and theScarlet Witch to defend it. Scarlet Witch and Never Queen were forced to destroy multiple Black Winters from infiltrating the Land of Couldn't Be-Shouldn't-Be in order to keep the concept of magic and creativity alive.[17][18]Residents

Notes
- The Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be has been depicted as both an empty void and a desert-like landscape,[5] with the former being its most prominent depiction.
- The Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be's nature as a plane of non-existence allowed it to remain after theMultiverse collapsed; however, it should be noted thatGlorian stated it too could have been destroyed by the lastincursion if the rift he left open forDawn Greenwood and theSilver Surfer had not been closed.[1]
Trivia
- InDefenders: Beyond,Al Ewing associated the Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be with theAbyss from the occult religionThelema. Thelema's founderAleister Crowley described the Abyss in his bookLittle Essays Toward Truth as follows: "In the Abyss all things exist, indeed, at least in posse, but are without any possible meaning; for they lack the substratum of spiritual Reality. They are appearances without Law. They are thus Insane Delusions," which matches closely with the previously established nature of Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be.
- The Land of Couldn't-Be-Shouldn't-Be is associated with the JewishKabbalah'ssephirotDa'at, which represents the sharing of divine light.[4]
