Melter[source]

History

Origin & Early Years[]

Christopher Colchiss was an apparentmutant, who accidentally killed his parents with his powers when he was young.[4]

Young Masters/Young Avengers[]

As Melter, he was the leader of theYoung Masters, the team assembled byCoat of Arms and backed by theEnchantress.[5]

Christopher's original appearance

Melter has some serious doubts about the moral conviction of most his teammates, and twice he had made mistakes with his powers that killed people: his parents and more recently an old lady who maced him in the face thinking he was a mugger. Melter also caused a subway station to collapse by melting its supports by accident, though without causing any serious casualties. These incidents resulted in making him extremely hesitant to use his powers in combat. Melter desired to be a hero, but was unsure just what he needed to do in order to be one.[6]

Coat of Arms has said that she picked Christopher as the leader because he asks the right questions, like "What gives them the right to do what they do?"[5]

Mandarin[]

Colchiss was employed byMandarin, who gave him an upgraded suit. Then Chris helped Mandarin in his vengeance onIron Man, alongside many other past foes of the hero.[7]

Avengers Undercover, and Standoff[]

Colchiss was with the Young Masters when they worked for theShadow Council's incarnation of theMasters of Evil.[8]

At some later point, Colchiss was apprehended byS.H.I.E.L.D. and placed inPleasant Hill which served as the most unlikeliest of prisons.[9]

Krakoa[]

Like many other villainous and fractious mutants, Christopher was welcomed into the mutant-only nation ofKrakoa and given a clean slate. Unfortunately, Chris still lacked fine control over his powers, leading him to accidentally destroy parts of the island. Transfixed by a desire to be a hero, he also tried to spy oncouncil meetings. In the end,Magneto andProfessor X declared him guilty of breaking Krakoa's Second Law, "protect this sacred land". AlongsideNekra,Oya,Third Eye, andBox, Melter was imprisoned in thePit of Exile beneath Krakoa.

Once in the Pit, the prisoners were greeted by a hellscape shaped bySabretooth, who up until that point had been its sole inhabitant.[10] In fact, this was not a physical confrontation, but a mental communion, for the inhabitants of the Pit were all held in stasis by Krakoa.[11] Sabretooth, bored, tried to hunt them. However, Third Eye was able to use his mutant gift to break the illusion, and convinced Victor to seek vengeance on their jailers. The illusion changed to depict a prison, with Professor X and Magneto as the wardens.[12]

Sabretooth taught the other prisoners how to channel their minds through Krakoa and manifest themselves on the surface. This was a skill he had learned during his long isolation; however, as there was nobody who actually wanted to help him, it was useless in his hands. While Victor sent the other prisoners to find allies, he kept Melter back, sensing his loyalty to Xavier. Sabretooth attacked Chris, beating him to a bloody pulp before explaining his plan. While he was distracted, Christopher was able to gain enough control over his body to touch and melt Victor's body.[11] As their minds were all connected, the physical shock of this act nearly killed not only Sabretooth, but the other prisoners as well.

For better or worse, Sabretooth survived. The experience was transformative for Melter, who emerged with strange, seemingly metallic form. Gathering the prisoners, Sabretooth explained his schemes. However, he was of course lying. Victor convincedCypher to free him to avert a rebellion,[13] but let the plan hatched proceed, allowing him to escape Krakoa entirely without issue. Cypher, having recognized his error, gathered Melter and all the others prisoners, including the newly imprisonedToad,Orphan-Maker, andNanny, and sent them to capture the fugitive.[14]

Exiled[]

While riding Madison Jeffries, Third Eye tracked Sabretooth to a place calledNoble Island. The island was a storage forDoctor Barrington failed experiments. When Third Eye sensed Barrington's arrival, the newly-formedExiles took action against the doctor'sCreation. While, unfortunately Barrington's plan to kidnap Orphan-Maker succeeded, the Exiles met with Sabretooth again, who was held captive on Station Six.[2]
