—Blackheart[source]Mephisto, have you ever stopped to wonder just what it is you are doing inHell? Or as you call it, the Netherworld? This is the realm of the accursed! Why do you think you are here?
History
Origins[]

Original form
Centuries of murder in a locale namedChrist's Crown, inNew York, drew the attention of the demon-lordMephisto, who used the energy of the accumulated evil there to create a "son," Blackheart. Blackheart explored the nature of evil under his father's tutelage, clashing with and failing to corruptDaredevil andSpider-Man.[14] Mephisto and Blackheart once tormented Daredevil,Brandy Ash, the genetically engineeredNumber Nine, and theInhumansGorgon,Karnak,[15] andAhura,[16] manipulating their emotions and tricking them. They were soon drawn intoHell for worse torments.[17] Brandy Ash did not survive.[18]
In an attempt to be free of captivity, Blackheart made contact withMisha, from the groupWarheads, and became the source of her precognitive visions. Eventually Misha's squad, theKether Troop, invaded Hell itself and freed Blackheart, who was temporarily in the disguise ofDoctor Strange.[19]
Mephisto sent Blackheart toEarth with his powers diminished to make him learn humility. Blackheart returned to Christ's Crown and lured theGhost Rider, thePunisher, andWolverine to the town in an attempt to corrupt them. The group eventually followed Blackheart back into his own realm for a final confrontation.[6] He would once again attempt to commission their services, using them to help him finally destroy Mephisto and take over his portion of Hell.[13]
Alongside theGrim Reaper, Blackheart broughtWonder Man toMephisto's Realm to fight his father.[20]
Blackheart later created a group ofSpirits of Vengeance in order to oppose the Ghost Rider, who recently found out he wasNoble Kale. In the hopes of killing him, Blackheart tricked and recruited him as a member of his group of Spirits of Vengeance, promising Kale the power to rule in Hell alongside Blackheart. In the end, the Ghost Rider double-crossed and killed him, freeing the other Spirits of Vengeance, and gaining rule of Blackheart's portion of Hell.[21]
He was later seen alive and attending a meeting withMephisto,Satannish,Hela, andDormammu about a disturbance created by the newly resurrectedMagik, who was looking for theSoulsword and the originalBloodstone amulet.Belasco's daughter,Witchfire, appeared during the meeting and revealed herself as the current owner of the original amulet and vowed to take her father's place as ruler ofLimbo and seat at their table.[22]
Circle of Four[]
After being cast out of Hell and left powerless on Earth by Mephisto, Blackheart and his partner and lover, the gargoyle priestessGari Oyle, began plotting a way to bring Hell to Earth so Blackheart could overthrow his father. To accomplish that, they needed to perform a ritual that required, among other things, one hundredhuman souls signed over of their own volition. Therefore, they disguised themselves as humans and opened a casino inLas Vegas named "TheDevil's Den," intending to make those who would be in debt to it give their own souls as payment.[8]
Expecting his father to try and harm them, Blackheart killedPat Mulligan to acquire theToxin symbiote and purchased a vial ofX-23's blood to create a set ofsymbiote-cladclones to protect him: theSymbiote Warriors. The Toxin symbiote was later stolen byVenom andJack O'Lantern at theCrime-Master's behest, but Blackheart had already secured a piece of its flesh to use in the ritual by then.[23]

With all the ingredients at hand, Blackheart and Gari Oyle initiated the ritual and tricked the unexperienced newGhost Rider,Alejandra, into powering theHell Centrifuge they had built. A doorway opened and Hell started to spread through Las Vegas; however,Johnny Blaze left a magical amulet at the city limits that halted the expansion. Ghost Rider then joined forces withVenom,Red Hulk, and X-23 to stop Blackheart. Upon being confronted by the four heroes, Blackheart used theH'elian's Mirror Cauldron to createAntitheses of them.[8] Both the heroes and their Antitheses died in battle,[24] but Mephisto gave the fallen heroes a second chance at life in order to stop his son.[25]
Following Alejandra's death, Gari Oyle capturedZarathos and delivered it to Blackheart. He wanted to bond with the Spirit of Vengeance[26] and use the power he would gain to destroy his father,[27] but Red Hulk and Venom managed to steal it from him. The Spirit and theVenom symbiote then bonded to Red Hulk,[26] who used the H'elian's Mirror Cauldron to create an antithesis of Blackheart, defeating him and returning Las Vegas to normalcy. In Hell, Mephisto gave Blackheart and Gari Oyle a new chance to try and take over his realm, but this time beginning from a point lower than the last.[27]
Back with a Vengeance[]
Some time later, Blackheart, who had somehow acquired back his demonic powers, manipulatedEternity into kidnapping his sister,Mistress Death, and trapping heroutside himself, making dying impossible acrossthe entire universe. With the chaos caused by Death's disappearance, Blackheart possessedBlack Talon, who was helpingDeadpool andThanos in their quest of saving Mistress Death, in order to invadeHell without his father's knowledge. When the time came, he got out of Black Talon and battled Mephisto to take control over his realm. However, his plan eventually failed as Deadpool rescued Mistress Death, returning the universe to its natural order.[28]
Chicago's Gang War[]

Blackheart attempted to claim theEarth as his own, fighting theAvengers and defeating them effortlessly. His plan was thwarted bySpider-Man, whose venom blast attack took Blackheart by surprise, and forced him to retreat.[29] Blackheart's subsequent approach to world subjugation was much more subtle. He disguised himself as the mayor ofChicago, and worked in secret withDray, the leader of one of the city's biggest gangs, theSouthstone Rangers, to incite and exacerbate violence. Blackheart's endgame was to turn the city into the epicenter of humanity's downfall, causing mankind to destroy itself and leave the planet ready for reaping.[30]
Blackheart was opposed byFalcon and his apprenticePatriot, who attempted to control the riot. Blackheart used his disguise as the mayor to have Falcon and Patriot arrested,[31] and tried to dispose of them after revealing his true nature. However, they were rescued byDoctor Voodoo. When Falcon confronted Blackheart again, the demon unceremoniously ripped his soul straight from his body and sent him to Hell.[32] He was saved by the combined efforts of his allies.[33] During Falcon's third confrontation against Blackheart, Dray turned against his ally, and killed himself, using theKey of Abbadon gifted to him by Blackheart himself to force Blackheart back into Hell, putting an end to his scheme and the magically-fueled riot. Blackheart was taken by Mephisto's lackeys for punishment, but his father ensured him he was already planning Falcon's death, since Mephisto also had a feud with him for escaping his domain.[7]
Against the Champions[]
Being held by Mephisto, Blackheart became privy to his father's latest scheme as he had given the younger Spider-Man and hisChampions teammateBrawn a chance to go back in time and save their teammatesMs. Marvel andViv Vision from dying at the hands ofZzzax, knowing the guilt of letting an innocent die because of it would tear them up inside.[34] However, Blackheart wasn't satisfied and went after the other Champions, starting withIronheart, who had been pushing away Viv due to the synthezoid apparently having feelings for her. As he took control of the newer members of the team, he had them attack the original members.[35] The plan ended up backfiring as it ended up strengthening their bonds as Ms. Marvel revealed her identity to Spider-Man and the repoweredyounger Nova while Spider-Man and Brawn overcame their grief over making their decision. The Champions freed their teammates and united to defeat Blackheart. Furious over having his plans for the younger Spider-Man thwarted by his son's ineptitude, Mephisto captured and dragged Blackheart back to his realm.[36]
Freeing his father[]
When Lilith tried to usurp Hell's throne, Blackheart started a plan to free his father. He infected the souls of Emma andStacy Dolan to make Danny Kench join him in his plan[37][38] along withCaretaker. In New York they rescued Mephisto from theSymbiote Dragon. Blackheart, using a lesser loyal demon as a sacrifice, opened the portal of a thousand condemned souls to put an end to the war, but Johnny Blaze tried once more to keep Mephisto as his prisioner.
Sara and Death Rider persuaded Blaze to let Mephisto reclaim his throne, to which Blaze begrudgingly obliged. As a parting gift, Mephisto captured the Symbiote Dragon and promised to destroy it, but upon returning to Hell, he revealed to Blackheart his intentions to find a means of weaponizing it for his own purposes.[39]
Joining the Avengers Academy[]

Blackheart's human form
Blackheart was sent by Mephisto to capture the time-displaced souls of his "siblings"Tommy andBilly Maximoff from theAvengers Academy Campus, although Blackheart was reluctant to follow through with it as he deemed the boys' souls to be innocent. While attempting to capture the twins, Blackheart encounteredBloodline andEscapade, with the latter using her body-switching powers on him. Moved by Escapade's feelings for Bloodline and his own guilt, Blackheart let the children go and returned to Hell empty handed.[40]
As punishment for his failure and being influenced by human emotions, Mephisto transformed Blackheart into a human and banished him back to Earth. A naked and weakened Blackheart requested aid from theAvengers Academy before collapsing from exhaustion. Although wary of him and due to the winter holiday spirit, the students reluctantly invited Blackheart to live with them andCaptain Marvel gave him a spot among the student body, where he quickly grew accustomed to human culture.[41] Blackheart took the name "Gabriel" and attendedTony Stark's masquerade ball where the Avengers Academy were guests of honor. The party ended in disaster due to the students' antics; Blackheart got into an altercation with Doctor Strange and several other attending sorcerers when Strange mistakenly believed that the demon had infiltrated the Academy until Captain Marvel cleared up the misunderstanding.[1]Attributes
