Arcade[source]

Arcade is a hitman who is often hired to take out irksome heroes. While he is normally rather successful,[7] Arcade rarely fares well against true superheroes. Despite his prowess in killing people, Arcade refuses to kill them in typical ways, preferring instead to build giant death traps calledMurderworlds to kill them, enjoying the game itself more than the actual murder. Due to his inability to kill anyone of consequence, and his exuberant mannerisms, Arcade's reputation among the villain community has declined rapidly,[6] and even young superheroes such asHazmat have cited him as "the worst bad guy ever."[8]

History

Origin[]

Arcade gave differing accounts of his past life, and as yet there is no evidence to substantiate any of those accounts. Apparently Arcade told falsehoods about his past to mislead and confuse his opponents for his own amusement.

One of Arcade's accounts stated that he was the spoiled son of a millionaire living in Beverley Hills, California, and killed his own father to acquire his vast sums of money on his 21st birthday, possibly also because he had treated him like he was worthless.[6] In killing his father, Arcade discovered that he had a talent and liking for murder. He therefore became an assassin, but was soon bored with killing by ordinary means, and used his great wealth to construct hidden complexes of high-tech death traps designed in the manner of an amusement park.[9]

Murderworld[]

Arcade killed victims by trapping them within his "Murderworld" for whomever would pay the millions he charged. To Arcade, the game itself was more important than the expense or even the winning. Arcade was also contracted to kill various super heroes, from common foes likeSpider-Man and theX-Men, to other targets likePuck andNorthstar ofAlpha Flight, and evenGhost Rider, but these attempts always resulted in failure. Occasionally, Arcade held personal grudges against heroes, trying to kill them for free, such asCaptain Britain.[10]

Arcade had a relation with his long-time assistantMiss Locke but preferred to kill her instead of getting too close to her,[6] and mutilated his own face during a plot to frameWolverine in a complex "Jack the Ripper"-like series of murders. His plot was defeated by Wolverine,Gambit, and his former allyMartinique Jason, the daughter ofMastermind, who left Arcade in a state of delusion.[11]

At some point, Arcade recovered, and returned to his usual modus operandi, capturing heroes such as Spider-Man and theBlack Cat but escaping capture.[12]

Arcade andWhite Rabbit attempted to kill Wolverine and the Black Cat but failed.[13] He also appeared to have a relationship with White Rabbit but they broke up.[14]

Avengers Arena[]

Throwing a party at his estate for his 29th birthday, Arcade learned that he was being made fun of by the super-villain community. In despair, Arcade let himself be attacked by his new assistantMiss Coriander (having forgotten that he requested she kill him as a "birthday gift"). In the hospital, Arcade admitted to Miss Coriander that he was no longer satisfied with merely playing, as he realized that "winning is everything".

After recovering and giving Miss Coriander his Murder Island to her as severance pay, Arcade fled to his bar, TheHole, inCentral Bagalia. As he sat drinking, he was burgled by one of the villains who had made fun of him,Constrictor, but Arcade tricked Constrictor into knocking himself out on one of the bar's hidden traps. From this incident, Arcade gained a renewed interest in his career and rehired Miss Coriander to help him create a new Murderworld inAntarctica. Miss Coriander also provided Arcade a special suit that allowed him to emulate a wide range of superpowers while inside Murderworld's confines.[6]

Inspired by one of his favorite books, Arcade then kidnapped sixteen teenage superheroes (theAvengers Academy's Hazmat,Mettle,X-23,Reptil, andJuston Seyfert; theRunaways'Nico Minoru andChase Stein; Braddock Academy'sKid Briton,Anachronism,Nara,Apex,Bloodstone; and independentsRed Raven,Cammi,Ryker/Death Locket, andDarkhawk) and trapped them in his new Murderworld, telling them that they would be trapped there for a month and would have to kill each other to survive. This, of course, caused the heroes to attack him. However, Arcade used his nanomachine-laced suit to counter their attacks. He then told them to chose the 'weak link' of the group, and that he'd kill that person first. As Hazmat continued attacking him, Arcade chose her for the group until Mettle offered himself in her place. Arcade complied, blowing him to pieces before leaving.[8] As the game continued, the captured heroes eventually began to kill each other as Arcade had hoped, largely due to Apex controlling Death Locket, causing her to attack several other contestants, and X-23, who Arcade exposed toTrigger 42, causing her to attack anyone in sight. Ultimately, Kid Briton,[15] Juston Seyfert,[16] Nico Minoru,[17] Nara,[18] and Reptil[19] were killed by other contestants (though Nico was later resurrected[20]). In addition, Red Raven died when attempting to escape the Arena.[21]

Arcade continued to survey his Murderworld contestants until he was attacked in his control center by Christopher Powell, Apex, and Death Locket, forcing him to flee, leaving Apex in control. He later convinced Apex to continue his murder game as part of a deal that he would make her seem like a victim and hero in the end by editing the evidence left behind. However, it was later revealed he uploaded the uncut footage to the Internet on Youtube, ruining the contestants' reputations and exposing the events that transpired to the world.[19]

Arcade attached to the Masters of Evil's stolen Helicarrier

After the young heroes were liberated,[22] Arcade was killed byHazmat in Bagalia, while she and other survivors of Murder World were trying to infiltrate theMasters of Evil.[23] However, it was revealed that he was actually alive and was imprisoned in a cell next to Cammi.[24] The one that Hazmat killed was a clone made by the Masters of Evil. In the end the Masters tied him to the front of aS.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier that they stole to torture him as they flew around.[25]

KingOfPWN[]

Arcade met a young Inhuman going by the alias of3mul@t0r who was attending classes atEmpire State University. Manipulating her into becoming a villain, Arcade, using the alias KingOfPWN, convinced her to use her powers to attackMs. Marvel,Ms. America,Squirrel Girl, andInferno.[3] With them trapped in a virtual reality, Arcade revealed himself and began to absorb Emulator's powers. When the four heroes escaped from Emulator's virtual reality, Arcade used her powers to create one of his own, which he dubbed "Terror Trap."

With the four heroes now inside his Terror Trap, Arcade elected to use them to test his creation for bugs or glitches that would enable heroes he planned to ultimately use the trap on to escape. He also programmed messages specifically for certain heroes, such asCyclops,Colossus, andInferno. However, Emulator turned on Arcade and helped the four young heroes escape the game. Using Emulator's powers, Arcade created an avatar of himself to enable himself to escape. After Emulator destroyed the machine that was siphoning her powers, Arcade lost her powers.[26]

Kraven's Great Hunt[]

Having returned to Bagalia, Arcade's services were employed by one of Spider-Man's foes,Kraven the Hunter, to orchestrate his "Great Hunt." Using appropriated blueprints of thePlanetary Defense Shield,[27] Arcade sealed offCentral Park and turned it into a hunting ground where numerous animal-themed criminals previously abducted by the mercenariesTaskmaster andBlack Ant were confined.[28] These criminals were hunted down by an army ofHunterbots of Arcade's creation, which were controlled remotely by a cadre of wealthy would-be hunters assembled and tricked by Kraven,[29] since the Hunterbots' pilots couldn't take off the VR headset used to control the drones, and any damage made to their units recoiled on their bodies to the point of risking death.[30]

Early into the tournament, Arcade was instructed by Kraven to provide theVulture with a device called theHunter Killer capable of disabling Hunterbots to help balance the odds in the villains' favor, under the pretense that he was doing it behind Kravens' back.[31] Arcade also cloned the villainVermin and set him and his duplicates on Spider-Man, who had been wrapped into Kraven's plan.[30] When Spider-Man confronted Kraven, he had Arcade share with the Wall-Crawler that he had been instructed by Kraven to put an end to the Great Hunt if Spider-Man killed him. After Spider-Man managed to reject Kraven's ideals and instead made him embrace his, the hunter ordered Arcade to shut down the operation.[32] Before being able to escape, Arcade was apprehended byCaptain Marvel.[33]

Murderworld II[]

Arcade decided to organize a new deadly tournament, planning to lure two hundred notable individuals and have them kill each other for the prize of one hundred million dollars. Some of contestants he'd invited includedPaul Pastor,Eden Abraha,Vincent Patilio, andMarina Komarova among others, and upon arriving he set hisLife Model Decoys of various superheros to hunt each of them down, taking glee in their suffering but becoming enraged over some of them beating his games.[34]

Arcadium[]

Arcade started working withMentallo on a new illusion-making machine called theArcadium, situated in the sewers ofManhattan, near the tunnels whereShift and theVermin lived. In their pitch toHammerhead, the two planned to target New York's wealthy by attaching them to the Arcadium's illusion making technology and making them live out their fantasies, keeping them addicted to the simulations in order to gain money and important information from their dreams, which Hammerhead agreed to fund. However, the two resorted to tricking and kidnapping civilians to use as beta testers for the Arcadium. While investigating the disappearances, the twoSpider-Men discovered the Arcadium, but were swiftly made unconscious and attached to the machine. The two criminals' new desire became discovering the two heroes' secret identities using the Arcadium. Much to their frustration, the two were unable to identify the Spider-Men after unmasking them and the heroes wouldn't disclose their full names in their mental simulations, which they found to be boring, but nonetheless the criminals were satisfied that they had them permanently trapped in the Arcadium. Unfortunately the Spider-Men were able to realize they were trapped in a simulation. Mentallo called Hammerhead in a panic but Arcade was able to trick the two Spider-Men into fighting each other by making believe the other was an illusion.[35] Nonetheless, Hammerhead arrived to check on his investment and ordered Arcade and Mentallo to hook him up to the Arcadium. The Spider-Men eventually discovered the ruse just as Hammerhead confronted them with several robotic holograms of other supervillains. When the Spider-Men were gaining the upper hand against Hammerhead and the robots, Arcade and Mentallo activated "Protocol Zed" to purge the Acadium's A.I.[36] Unbeknownst to Arcade and Mentallo, the A.I. had formed an alliance with theJackal, who helped create a physical form for the A.I. calledK.N.A.I.V.E. within the Arcadium. Against its creators' commands, K.N.A.I.V.E. attacked the Spider-Men, Hammerhead, Shift and the Vermin along with help from the Jackal and several of his clones. The Spider-Men and their allies were able to defeat K.N.A.I.V.E. and the Jackal and disable the Arcadium, freeing its test subjects from its control and allowing Arcade to activate Zed, which destroyed K.N.A.I.V.E.[37] The two were able to evade arrest from the authorities with the help ofTurk Barrett, one of their beta testers, who offered a new proposition to them.[38] The two planned to franchise the Arcadium as Arcadium 2.0 and were able save K.N.A.I.V.E.'s A.I. by having it inhabit Turk's body.[39]

Attributes

Power Grid[42]

Powers

Arcade normally has no superpowers of his own, but gained a multitude of energy-based powers via a nanomachine-enhanced suit that only functioned within his newMurderworld inAntarctica.[6]

His insanity seemingly grants him some level of comic awareness, allowing him (for example) to grasp and eat the little angel and demon onDeadpool's shoulders.[40]

Abilities

Genius Intelligence: Although he has no superhuman powers, Arcade has a genius level I.Q. and a natural aptitude for mechanics, architecture and applied technology. A brilliant and self-taught designer, Arcade applies his talents to the construction of mobile amusement park-like deathtraps, which he calls "Murderworlds".[1]

Trivia

  • Arcade's bow tie is a clip-on.[27]
