This end-of-year fundraiser surpassed our greatest hopes, and we are still reeling from this incredible achievement. You came together to dedicate over half a million dollars to the Python ecosystem and community! Our small fundraising team put in a lot of work, but it truly wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and support from our wonderful community. PSF Board and Staff alike are astonished and deeply committed to making the most of every dollar.

Words and emojis feel inadequate to express our vast appreciation, but we still want to say them:
Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks and thanks and MORE THANKS 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Engineering and Development Updates

Improving security and integrity of Python package archives

The Security Developer-in-Residence Seth Larsonpublished a new white paper withAlpha-Omega on improving the security and integrity of the archive standards backing Python packages such as ZIP and tar. This white paper follows from multiple vulnerabilities and differential attacks that were reported to common Python package installers and handlers, such as “zipfile”, “tarfile” in use by pip,Poetry, and PyPI, and astral-async-tar in use by uv.

The white paper described the work done to implementcomprehensive protections at the package repository layer (PyPI) to protect all installers, whether vulnerable or not, in coordination with package installer security teams for pip and uv. This work also resolved potential vulnerabilities in handling mismatches between ZIP archive central directories and the Python package “RECORD” file.

Expanding PyPI Security Capabilities

PyPI has been an innovator with Trusted Publishing, and now has theability to integrate with self-managed GitLab instances for those organizations that prefer to host their own instances. Aphishing-prevention safety guard has been added to the account login process for users with TOTP (or authenticator apps), requiring an email-based confirmation. Using phishing-resistant techniques like WebAuthn are preferred and skip this step.

Sovereign Tech Agency and PSF Security Partnership

The Sovereign Tech Agency hassponsored two security projects, one improving account security and recovery on the Python Package Index (PyPI) by allowing users to associate accounts with other identity providers, such as GitHub or Gmail. The second project improves the fuzzing harnesses for Python standard library modules for archives following recommendations in therecent white paper on archive integrity. This project uses property-based testing from theHypothesis package along with OSS-Fuzz to ensure better coverage of Python-based archive implementations.

Open Infrastructure is not Free

In September 2025, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) co-signed theOpen Infrastructure is Not Free: A Joint Statement on Sustainable Stewardship Letter published by theOpen Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) as a steward of thePython Package Index (PyPI).Our follow up blog post, authored by PSF Director of Infrastructure Ee Durbin, highlights the history and current conditions of PyPI and Python usage, what it takes to operate these services, and our hopes for the future of the infrastructure that underpins these critical services. Check outthe blog post to learn more about how each user and company utilizing PyPI can support its future.

Sustainability starts with Support: PSF on Arm infrastructure

Sustainable open source depends on sustainable infrastructure– andit isn’t free. Our recent case study with Arm, GitHub, and AWS, highlights how corporate support enables reliable, scalable services for the global Python community. By migrating core services like PyPI and CI workflows to Arm-based AWS Graviton instances and GitHub’s Arm64 runners, the PSF achieved a 25% reduction in compute costs, 40% lower carbon emissions, and improved performance for millions of users. This work, led by PSF infrastructure, CPython developers, and corporate partners underscores how direct investment in open source strengthens the ecosystem we all rely on.

CPython Core Dev Sprint

In fall of 2025, Arm’s Cambridge HQ hostedthe largest-ever CPython Core Developer Sprint, bringing 35 core devs and 13 guests together for a week of deep technical collaboration. From JIT and performance discussions to packaging, language design, ecosystem infrastructure, and mentorship, the event accelerated key work on Python’s future. The PSF sends a huge thanks toArm for hosting!

PSF Board Updates

PSF Board Office Hours continue!

The newest PSF Board has decided to continue investing in connecting with the global Python community by running the PSF Board Office Hour sessions on thePSF Discord into 2026! We began running these sessions in September 2024, and the sessions have provided the PSF Board and Staff the opportunity to hear what our community is up to and what challenges they are facing, as well as receive invaluable feedback about how the PSF can continue to improve our service to the Python community.

The office hour sessions take place on the PSF Discord server in the #psf-board channel. If you are new to Discord, make sure to check outa tutorial on how you can download the app and sign up for free– then join us on thePSF Discord! Check outour recent blog post to learn more about the sessions and find the schedule for 2026.

Celebrating 2025 CSAs

The PSF Community Service Awards (CSAs) are a formal way for the PSF Board of Directors to offer recognition of work which, in its opinion, significantly improves the Foundation's fulfillment of its mission and benefits the broader Python community. These awards shine a light on the incredible people who are the heart and soul of our community– those whose dedication, creativity, and generosity help the PSF fulfill its mission. The PSF CSAs celebrate individuals who have been truly invaluable, inspiring others through their example, and demonstrate that service to the Python community leads to recognition and reward.

The PSF is pleased to share our 2025 CSA recipients:

Jay Miller
Katie McLaughlin
Matt Lebrun
Micaela Reyes
Sarah Kuchinsky
Rodrigo Girão Serrão

If you know of someone in the Python community deserving of a PSF CSA award, please submit them to the PSF Board via psf@python.org at any time. You can read more aboutPSF CSAs on our website

PSF Updates

Sharing about the PSF's Financial Outlook

In ablog post we published in November 2025, we shared a candid look at the PSF’s financial picture in advance of our 2025 end-of-year fundraiser and how recent grant decisions, rising costs, and growing demand intersect. We connected the dots between community support, our financial runway, and the essential work we sustain, like Python infrastructure and PyCon US. The post highlights both the challenges we faced and the generosity of our community that has helped us continue moving forward. Check outthe blog post to learn more about our outlook, what the PSF is doing to bolster our financial security, and how you can help!

The PSF has withdrawn a $1.5 million proposal to US government grant program

In January 2025,the PSF applied for a $1.5M grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) to make innovative improvements to packaging security—and we were recommended for funding! But as a condition of funding, we were asked to affirm that we wouldn’t undertake any diversity, equity, and inclusion work, whether or not we used the government funds to do so. The PSF simply couldn’t agree to that statement, as facilitating “the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers” is written directly into our mission and core to our values, so we withdrew our application. In the end, it wasn’t a hard decision for the PSF to put our community and our values first, but it does mean we lost out on this large funding source.

The community’s response to this news blew us away, with a flood of supportive messages and a totally unexpected surge in donations, includinga community-organized matching drive. As a result, we hit our initial 2025 year-end fundraiser goal, set a new one, and hit that goal, too! Most importantly we are moved beyond words by our community coming together to stand with us and our mission.
