Database dumps
by Byrial Jensen 17 Apr '25

17 Apr '25
Until some weeks agohttp://dumps.wikimedia.org/backup-index.html usedto show 4 dumps in progress at the same time. That meant that newdatabase dumps normally was available within about 3 weeks for alldatabases except for enwiki and maybe dewiki where the dump process dueto size took longer time. However the 4 dumps processes at one time become 3 some weeks ago. Andafter massive failures at June 4, only one dump has been in progress atthe same time. So at the current speed it will take several months tocome thru all dumps. Is it possible to speed up the process again using several dumpprocesses at the same time?Thank you,Byrial

EBNF grammar project status?
by Steve Bennett 01 Apr '25

01 Apr '25
What's the status of the project to create a grammar for Wikitext in EBNF?There are two pages:http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikitext_Metasyntaxhttp://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Markup_specNothing seems to have happened since January this year. Also the comments onthe latter page seem to indicate a lack of clear goal: is this just a funproject, is it to improve the existing parser, or is it to facilititate anew parser? It's obviously a lot of work, so it needs to be of clearbenefit.Brion requested the grammar IIRC (and there's a comment to that effect athttp://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7), so I'm wondering what became of it.Is there still a goal of replacing the parser? Or is there some alternativeplan?Steve

Missing Section Headings
by Marc Riddell 13 Sep '24

13 Sep '24
Hello,I have been a WP editor since 2006. I hope you can help me. For some reasonI no longer have Section Heading titles showing in the Articles. This istrue of all Headings including the one that carries the Article subject'sname. When there is a Table of Contents, it appears fine and, when I clickon a particular Section, it goes to that Section, but all that is there is astraight line separating the Sections. There is also no button to edit aSection. If I edit the page and remove the "== ==" markers from the SectionTitles, the Title then shows up, but not as a Section Heading. Also, I don'thave any Date separators on my Want List. This started 2 days ago. Anythoughts? Thanks,Marc Riddell[[User:Michael David]]

MediaWiki to Latex Converter
by Hugo Vincent 18 Jun '12

18 Jun '12
Hi everyone,I recently set up a MediaWiki (http://server.bluewatersys.com/w90n740/) and I need to extra the content from it and convert it into LaTeX syntax for printed documentation. I have googled for a suitable OSS solution but nothing was apparent.I would prefer a script written in Python, but any recommendations would be very welcome.Do you know of anything suitable?Kind Regards,Hugo Vincent,Bluewater Systems.

It seems that someone's added a checkbox "Log me in globally" onCentralAuth's modified Special:Userlogin. This is kind of not great in thatit clogs up the user interface with something that should always 100% of thetime be on, and should never be optional. The feature request:https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20852The commit:http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/75041If there's no strong objection, I'd like to revert it. If there really issome very specific need for non-global logins (wtf?!) this should besomething that individual people who really need it can *get to* with theirsecret wizard knowledge but not inflict on everyone else. ;)-- brion

Easy code review
by Ashar Voultoiz 02 Mar '11

02 Mar '11
Hello,I noticed code review lagging a bit in trunk, which I was expecting since 1.17 have kept guru busy for the last month. When I started code reviewing in October or November 2010, I have spent hours and hours reviewing trivial revisions that mostly anyone could have marked ok.In attempt to get more people to review the code, I have started marking my own trivial commits with the tag 'easy'. It would be a good way to start being confident in reviewing code if you have not yet tried :)The list is at:http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/tag/easyIt would be great if other developers can tag their commits with the same tags and we could start shy developers in reviewing more.cheers,-- Ashar Voultoiz

New weekend, new sprint to fix 1.17 blockers
by mhershberger@wikimedia.org 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11
Since several people gave me some very positive feedback about lastweekend's sprint to fix the tarball blockers for 1.17, I'm going to havea new sprint to fix the 1.17 blockers. Before we get started, though, let me give some recognition to the people who have fixed bugs this pastweek: 27440 Special:Types non-functional on 1.17 Jeroen De Dauw (SMW bug that probably shouldn't have been a tarball blocker, but, hey!, thanks Jeroen!) 27506 <gallery> is printed in 1 file per row Krinkle 27607 Special:NewPages only showing last 24 hours since 1.17 Derk-Jan Hartman closed it WORKSFORMEThere were also two bugs that, after investigation, are no longertarball blockers: 27474 [[#_foo|bar]] renders with href="#foo" , breaking Cite anchors configuration issue 27571 GRAMMAR rules from $wgGrammarForms don't work with fallback-language Niklas Laxström told me he couldn't reproduce this one or track it downAnd now, the still-outstanding blocker bugs. A couple of bugs have beenadded, but I think that overall we're making good progress. First, thebugs related to the new installer that Tim mentioned last week. Sincethe installer will be the first exposure many people have to 1.17 andthe code is all new, I think these deserve special attention. 12070 After Installation MySQL was blocked 26481 New installer doesn't fill in the $*Key values some times 26612 Regression: Postgres cannot install 26937 Deleted file path not visible when going back to page=Options 27579 Chrome saves config as LocalSettings.php.phpChad made some real progress on the Postgres installer (26612) and I said that Iwould take care of the remaining issue in, but I haven't had a chanceyet. Chad and Platonides have been working on 12070. Meanwhile, 26481,26937, and 27579 look pretty easy. I expect we could have all thistaken care of this weekend. If the UI is your thing but the installer bugs don't grab you, have alook at these: 27023 once dom ready mediawiki.loader.using issues callback before modules are ready 27490 RTL ui in LTR wiki is LTR aligned 27540 width of <gallery> always 100% 27566 New wikilink window grows in width each time when opened in Chrome 27577 Gallery perrow width is overestimated 27679 Ugly encoding in red file links containing an ampersand 27693 Doing double bar in image link inside table changed behaviourFinally, a couple more bugs if you none of the above whets yourappetite: 27403 Disabled preferences are taken into account anyway 27473 Apostrophe in linktrail breaks bolded linksI haven't included one blocker in the list because I think P.Copp'sjavascript minimizer fixes it. However, his contribution hasn't beeninstalled yet, so there may still be room to try your hand: 27528 JS minification still outputs incorrect javascript for some inputIf you're going to try your hand at any of these, I suggest you post acomment to wikitech-l so we have an idea of what you're doing.Note that if any of these don't excite you, you should check out #27339blockers:https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=27339&hide_resolve…Some of these require shell access, but some are bugs with MediaWikiextensions used on Wikimedia. As always, if you need help figuring something out or tracking down oneof these bugs, ask on #mediawiki on freenode.Happy hacking!Mark.

I'd like to start up the restof the processes by tomorrow at this time so if you can squeeze in sometime to look at them sooner rather than later that would be awesome.Thanks!Arielp.s. Yes this means I am done travelling for a while, thank goodness. Ithink I am sick of airplanes. And *very* sick of jet lag.
