Language file updates
by Brion Vibber 13 May '04

13 May '04
I'm sorry a lot of these have been held up for a while; we've been mainly working on stabilizing the wikis under the new server setup and preparing to put out a new release of the MediaWiki software with all the latest fixes and features -- for which of course we'll want the latest language files included. My old todo list page has gotten rather unwieldy and out of date, I'm afraid, and it's hard to tell what's been done, what hasn't, etc. It would be a big help if people could put the relevant information onto these new wiki pages (currently empty):http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_list_of_language_namesAll the suggestions for native language names that have been posted separately recently.http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_files_to_be_updatedPlease link to the exact wiki page that contains the updated file, or attach an update and send it to this list and say which was sent.If possible, please compare against the version of the file in CVS:http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phase3/languages/ and ensure that anything that got updated separately in CVS is also in your version.http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Other_language_bugsAny other bugs or problems that are specific to one of the languages/wikis: missing or corrupted messages, logo updates, sysops, etc.Hopefully we can get these things cleared up in the next few days...-- brion vibber (brion @pobox.com)

"Powered by MediaWiki"
by Dan Carlson 11 Apr '04

11 Apr '04
I was doing a little bit of fiddling around with my site's layout this evening, and I had an idea that someone more involved in the MediaWiki development might be interested -- a couple of little "powered by" badges that people can add to their site layout to show their support for this excellent software.I've quickly tossed together some ideas based on a couple of images I "borrowed" from the MediaWiki SourceForge page -- they're just a rough idea, so if anyone wants to develop the idea further, they're welcome to it. I can pass on the original Fireworks .png files, though it might be better to use the original source files, 'specially since I don't have the exact font used for the word "MediaWiki" and had to approximate to create the "Powered By" part.Let me know what you think!Dan Carlson

Hi Bernhard,it's very arguable what exactly is meant by "more professional".Generally speaking, speed is MySQL's forte, and is also what MediaWikihas a great need for (particularly with Wikipedia). The magazinearticles you've read were probably referring to some of the more"enterprise" features (MySQL for a long time did not supporttransactions, and replication was dubious at best) which MediaWikidoesn't really need. I don't personally think there is much benefit inletting the code use Postgres, but if you're willing to put in theeffort - hey, great, send a patch. As for the MediaWiki table structure, while I'm sure we can help withproblems you might encounter, it might be easier for you to install, temporarily, MySQL on one of your machines. MySQL binaries are availablefor a slew of operating systems and architectures, so it shouldn't takevery long.Cheers,Ivan>>> Bernhard.Naegele(a)t-online.de 03/27/04 12:02 PM >>>[...]In every article about Open Databases I read, that Postgres is a moreprofessional database than MySQL, so I wonder that there is no interrestin suporting also Postgresql, or is there also interrest? However, I have a running Postgres database and I want to run also aWiki Wiki. The question for me is now if I should take PHPWiki which hasPostgres support or if I should spend some time in enhancing MediaWiki. At the moment, it seams that MediaWiki has more interesting featuresthan PHPWiki.......So my first question: Was there a demand for Postgres in the past?Second: Is there anyone who can suport me if I have some question aboutMySQL (table-structure of MediaWiki) support of MediaWiki? I don't want toinstall also MySQL on some of my computers......Best regards,Bernhard_______________________________________________Wikitech-l mailing listWikitech-l(a)Wikipedia.orghttp://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l

Hello,Would it be possible to change the title of the main page from "Main Page Wikipedia" to "Main Page - Wikipedia free encyclopedia" ?Although the english wikipedia comes to top when you search google for"free encyclopedia" [1], the french wikipedia doesn't appear in the top 10 list when searching for "encyclopédie gratuite" cause other pages got this in their title [2].It will certainly get us new comers once google update its cache ;)REFERENCES:[1]:google.com search for "free encyclopedia":http://www.google.com/search?q=free+encyclopedia[2]: google.fr search for "encyclopédie gratuite":http://www.google.fr/search?q=encyclopédie+gratuite-- Antoinehttp://fr.wikipedia.org/L'encyclopédie gratuite et libre.do not send mail to listme(a)listme.dsbl.org

MediaWiki in Linux Magazine
by erik_moeller@gmx.de 01 Apr '04

My article about MediaWiki for the German Linux-Magazin has now been translated into English:http://www.linux-magazine.com/issue/42/Mediawiki.pdfKeep in mind that the pre-final of this article was finished on Jan 22. I sent them a few updates but it doesn't describe the in-place installer yet. Nevertheless the installation procedure as described should still work.Regards,Erik

CVS access for comments only
by Phil Boswell 31 Mar '04

The new [[m:Developer]] page talk about people initially contributing patches here on the mailing list and only after some time being given CVA access.I don't consider myself up-to-speed enough in PHP to contribute actual code, but I would like to help in documenting what's there. What would be an appropriate forum for posting proposed comments?-- Phil

Hi,does the contributions count on this page:http://www.wikipedia.org/wikistats/EN/TablesWikipediaEN.htmonly include contributions in the article namespace or something? I'm listed as having 6796 contributions, but according to Special:Contributions, I have many more.Nobody on #wikipedia seemed to know, so I'm asking here. Thanks,Timwi
