Release Team Sprint Results

The Release Team recently held a sprint, with the following aims: - complete planning for Jessie - review the freeze process - sprint release bugs and improvements in our tooling We would like to thank ARM for hosting and caffeinating us, andCodethink for feeding us. Travel sponsorship was funded bydonations to Debian. Freeze====== Debian 8 "Jessie" was frozen on 5th November 2014. Please ensureyou are familiar with the freeze policy <POLICY>.POLICY:https://release.debian.org/jessie/freeze_policy.htmlUnblocks========At the time of writing, we had already dealt with 162 unblockrequests. Of those, 17 require further information from thesubmitter, and three were pre-approvals awaiting upload.Sixteen unblock bugs await our attention. Please continue to fileunblocks with as much information included as possible; see <FREEZE-ANN>.FREEZE-ANN:https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/11/msg00003.htmlTransitions===========All transitions have been completed, with only a little tidying upremaining for libjpeg-turbo.Release notes=============We seek patches and editors for the release notes. We identifiedthe following topics as being particularly important:   - init system changes     - How to choose (before upgrading)     - Pros / cons of "upgrading"   - i486 support droppedThere are many other new areas that could be included. Ifyou'd like to get involved, please contact us for further details.Codenames=========Our release managers chose the following codenames for futurereleases:   * Debian 9 "Stretch"   * Debian 10 "Buster"Artwork / Debian Installer==========================Cyril Brulebois is co-ordinating artwork for Jessie, and expectsthat it will be ready before the holiday season. We'd like tothank those contributors who prepared artwork for this release.Jessie's artwork can be seen at <ARTWORK>.Development of the installer continues, and is progressing well. There are a few minor issues to iron out, and Cyril will beapproving unblocks to packages producing udebs by hand for thetime being. Please try to avoid udeb disruption and be patientif you're waiting for an unblock.ARTWORK:https://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Themes/LinesTeam Changes============For the Stretch cycle, Niels Thykier and Emilio Pozuelo Monfortwill be Release Managers.Julien Cristau joins Adam D. Barratt and Philipp Kern as a StableRelease Manager.Upgrade and installation tests==============================Please carry out upgrade tests from Wheezy to Jessie, and fileyour experience against the upgrade-reports pseudo-package.We also appreciate tests of fresh installations, with reportsagainst installation-reports.Architectures=============There remained yes/no decisions for arm64, ppc64el, and kfreebsd.arm64 and ppc64el have made enough progress to be releasearchitectures for Jessie. Britney no longer has special handlingfor these two. Therefore, FTBFS regressions for arm64 and ppc64elare now release critical (but non-regressions are not).We discussed kfreebsd at length, but are not satisfied that arelease with Jessie will be of sufficient quality. We are droppingit as an official release architecture, though we do hope that theporters will be able to make a simultaneous unofficial release.Freeze process review=====================We conducted an internal review of the freeze process for thiscycle.Release Team members generally expressed satisfaction at theprocess. We made a conscious decision to improve communication andpublish our detailed plans early in the cycle, and this workedwell. There is room for improvement. A future freeze will include atransition freeze, a soft freeze, and then the final hard freeze.Soft freezes will see us expect maintainers to comply with thefreeze policy, but this will not be strictly enforced by technicalmeans. The hard freeze will see the usual manual migrations by technicalmeans. Packages not in testing by the time the soft freeze beginswill not be migration candidates. We're likely to fine-tune this process during the next cycle, andwe will publish more specific details in due course. For the release team:-- Jonathan Wiltshire jmw@debian.orgDebian Developerhttp://people.debian.org/~jmw4096R: 0xD3524C51 / 0A55 B7C5 1223 3942 86EC 74C3 5394 479D D352 4C51
