Public funding is drying out. More and more non-profits start developing their own business to diversify their revenue. Do you have some examples of that to share? Is that something that you are also considering in your collective or organization?Share your thinking! 💭

  • It pays off to be transparent about your costs with your community.

One of these ads grew sales by 21.1%. Can you guess which? In 2020, Harvard researchers¹ tested the effects of showing a product's costs.Rather than just listing the price, they showed ingredient cost (and profit margin). For the test, this ad was shown in the Harvard canteen. Real-world sales were measured directly after the student saw the ad.Turns out, students were 21% more likely to buy the soup 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐧.Showcasing your costs boosts trust and makes customers more likely to buy. 🙏 A lot of gratitude to all of you for coming to our Open CollectiveFOSDEM meetup Saturday evening at theCommons Hub Brussels. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did!It was a beautiful evening with a mix of healthy local organic food 🥗 & drinks 🍻, presentations fromXavier Damman,Benjamin Piouffle,Leonardo Koch Kewitz,Kris Decoodt andLeen Schelfhout, a participative board to create the mycelium of the community 🕸️, another board to share our gratitude 🙏, offers & requests and conversation circles to have meaningful conversations in a cosy environmnent. 🔅🎉 We celebrated $50M raised for Open Source Collectives since we started theOpen Source Collective fiscal host. We talked about "protecting what is" with the current version of the platform moving to a new non-profit owned by existing fiscal hosts (Open Finance Consortium) and "making space for the new", with a new upcoming web3 version with support for multiple currencies.🏡 All of this at theCommons Hub Brussels, a space that is running on Open Collective and that is pushing us to keep innovating to embrace not only the yang economy of the euro or dollar, but also a yin economy. An economy that recognizes non-financial contributions that are equally important for the health and success of any collective. ☯️✨ To highlight some of the post-its that expressed gratitude: "Open Source makes my life much more enjoyable", "nice and supportive people in the open source community", "collective wisdom of the community", "members stepping up". But also gratitude to organizations such asNLnet foundation,Open Source Collective,Filecoin Foundation,Ethereum Foundation, ... 🎁 Offers to the community: "Better marketing and adoption" fromIra Nezhynska, "Mentoring program for women of open source" fromRuth Cheesley (she/her), "Help organizations make more contributions to open source and facilitate the relationship orgs-open source" fromGeorg Link, PhD🙋🏻♀️ And needs and requests: "looking for open source communities willing to become a DAO", "suggestions on how to get people / companies to contribute more recurrently", "bootstrap a lobbying group for digital commons bank", "a yin currency for our coop", "mentors for underrepresented folks in tech",Ruth Cheesley (she/her): "platform instance as a digital common", "researching core team governance models, who to add?", "peer support, knowledge sharing, collaboration!", and more! (see photo).Shall we do this again next year during FOSDEM 2026?Tag the people, organizations and collectives that you can see in the pictures!

The next Citizen Spotlight call is coming - and it’s your chance to meet these two powerhouse women, and learn about the work they’ve done to create what I think of as critical infrastructure for a#CitizenFuture…Between them,Pia Mancini andEsther Foreman have madeOpen Collective open and accessible to community organisations across the UK, so they can get started with their work quickly and easily, without having to spend time on admin ahead of action.Nuts and bolts, OC is a platform that enables a combination of open budgeting and crowdfunding - totally transparent incomings and outgoings. That transparency is what effectively replaces the admin: because anyone can see what’s going on, that is the governance. We’re signed up on OC as the Citizen Collective, and I’m excited to get into the structure and functionality… but mostly this call is going to be about the stories of these two very special humans.Pia, originally from Argentina, is one of the original OC cofounders. She and I have known each other a good few years, dating back to her 1m+ TED talk on “Upgrading Democracy for the Broadband Era” (link in comments), and her work on the pioneering Partido de la Red (The Network Party) in Argentina.Esther Foreman, for her part, is a serial civic and social entrepreneur who createdThe Social Change Nest to unleash the potential of OC in the UK. As founder also ofThe Social Change Agency and many other initiatives besides, Esther has been doing whatever the work demands for more years than she looks like she could have been alive, and is a true hero of mine.Come meet and learn from them! Wednesday 20th, 10am UK time.Registration here:https://lu.ma/agyw5s6m
