Discovered 1879 Oct. 13 by J. Palisa at Pola.
Named for the biblical Martha (Book of Luke of the New Testament), sister of Mary and Lazarus of Bethany. Martha’s hospitality to Jesus is documented. Palisa selected this name in remembrance to the hospitality of his Berlin colleagues on the occasion of the September 1879 assembly of the Astronomische Gesellschaft.
