BMC Ophthalmology is calling for submissions to our Collection on the Ocular manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative conditions affect both the central nervous system (CNS) and the visual system, significantly impacting visual and overall quality of life. Disorders of the CNS, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as those of the visual system, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, optic neuropathies and diabetic retinopathy, share common pathological characteristics. Moreover, CNS disorders often manifest in the ocular system. The intricate relationship between the eyes and the brain provides a unique window into understanding neurodegenerative diseases, offering potential for early diagnosis and treatment to halt or delay disease progression.
This Collection aims to explore the ocular features of neurodegenerative diseases, address challenges in ophthalmic diagnosis, and present innovative treatment approaches. Therefore, this Collection welcomes research articles that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
• Insight into the association between neurodegenerative diseases affecting the eyes and the CNS
• Novel imaging techniques for early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative changes in the eye
• Interventions for managing ocular complications associated with neurodegenerative diseases
• Advances in neuroprotective therapies for delaying or preventing neurodegenerative eye diseases
• Other complications relevant to neurodegenerative diseases in the eyes

Samuel Abokyi OD,PhD
Assistant Professor, The School of Optometry, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, Hong Kong.Samuel Abokyi holds a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and a PhD in Vision Science from PolyU. Dr Abokyi's research focuses on neurodegenerative eye disorders related to ageing and systemic diseases, utilizing basic, translational, and clinical research approaches. His PhD work on autophagy in age-related macular degeneration earned him the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. Dr Abokyi has extensive expertise in neurodegenerative ocular conditions.Kun-Che Chang PhD
University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, United States.Kun-Che Chang's research focuses on restoring vision loss, especially caused by glaucoma and optic neuropathy. Specifically, he investigates the molecular mechanism of RGC differentiation and hopes to apply the findings to gene and stem cell transplantation therapies.
