Abstract
From the Xinhai Revolution of 1911 to the late twentieth century, the imperial period in China, lasting over two thousand years since Qin and Han Dynasties, ended, and so began the convoluted process of social transformation amid domestic chaos and foreign invasion. This process had started during the Opium War in 1840 when China was gradually transformed into a semi-colony.

Herbert Allen Giles (8 December 1845–13 February 1935) was a British diplomat and sinologist who was the professor of Chinese at the University of Cambridge for 35 years. Giles was educated at Charterhouse School before becoming a British diplomat in China. At that time, he compiled theChinese Biological Dictionary in London. After hearing that Sun Yat-sen was out of danger, he wrote a letter to invite Sun Yat-sen to write a biography through Cantlie.

“9.18” Incident: Mukden Incident, (September 18, 1931), also called Manchurian Incident, seizure of the Manchurian city of Mukden (now Shenyang, Liaoning province, China) by Japanese troops in 1931, which was followed by Japan’s full-scale invasion of China and the rest of Asia, triggering the war against Japanese aggression.
“1.28” Incident: The January 28 Incident or Shanghai Incident (January 28 – March 3, 1932) was a conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, before official hostilities of the Second Sino-Japanese War commenced in 1937. Japan initiated the January 28th Incident in Shanghai to support and provide cover for its army’s aggression against northeast China.
