Abstract

Paleoecological history, edaphic phenomena, and huge geographical expanse have combined to produce in the Chihuanhuan Desert a complex but predictable vegetation reflecting dramatic edaphic phenomena. Geographical disruptions and climatic changes have superimposed regional faciations. The Chihuanhuan Desert can be characterized and mapped on the basis of a brief list of dominant and endemic shrubs. However, the fine discrimination of boundaries and comprehension of the internal structure of this desert demand a knowledge of its vegetation in terms of an edaphic mosaic. The Chihuanhuan Desert is a region characterized by edaphic phenomena. Non-desert relict vegetation contributes even further to the complexity.
