Abstract
Chapter 5 examines health, where humanitarian concerns intersect with business interests. Regional inequities result in high death rates due to preventable illnesses and diseases, particularly affecting women and children. Climate change and the pandemic have exacerbated the mortality rate worldwide, further exposing the inadequacies of some governments in providing sufficient access to care, medicines, and vaccines.
Quality care can reduce the death rate and improve the world’s health. Access to services by all people is essential for moral, practical, and economic reasons. In response to the health crisis, some companies are partnering with NGOs and governments to advance innovative solutions—including mobile technology and drone deliveries. Often, businesses are beginning to understand that solutions must be co-created by people who have grown up in the communities being served.
Healthcare is a vital concern for companies. They require healthy employees to perform their jobs productively. Additionally, when families are healthy, employees can focus on their work rather than caretaking at home. A well population and an efficient healthcare system provide a sound economy in which companies can operate and thrive. In some cases, solving healthcare challenges provides commercial opportunities for companies, including by demonstrating their value, as partners, to advance progress.
