Abstract
This chapter examines climate and the environment, which are inextricably linked. It opens with the warning that unless we change course, we are likely to breach the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C target in the next two decades, and even breach 2 °C around mid-century. The results will be catastrophic. To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must be halved by 2030—and drop to net-zero by 2050. This is the decisive decade. The chapter examines market incentives, including investor interests, for corporations to act on climate change. Cases show how some companies are decarbonizing cities, buildings, and transportation; developing smart cities; facilitating the transition to renewable energy with their industrial customers; designing zero plastic waste solutions for their products; and transforming food systems to address climate, food security, and farmer livelihoods. Some companies understand that their own futures depend on natural resources and the health of the planet. They also see that they will grow value by investing in solutions, while also elevating their brands by addressing consumer, employee, and investor concerns. Most fundamentally, it must be understood that there is no path for a better future unless solutions address climate and environmental justice. We live on one planet. What happens in one country affects us all. Understanding this is an ethical mandate. It is also fundamental to economies and businesses.
