How to End the Climate Crisis

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Two major reports on the state of the global environment released in 2018 made it clear that few governments are taking strong enough action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. A logical framework analysis points to the need to tackle climate change at a multitude of levels structured by economic sector: power generation, transport, industry, residential and tertiary, and agriculture. A wide range of policy initiatives and actions are identified which, if implemented and operationalised at scale, will lead to carbon neutrality by 2050, and bring about an end to the climate crisis. Ultimately, policymakers and decision-makers at the highest levels of government must be people who are seriously committed to taking action. But this will only happen if individuals and communities strongly signal their concerns and commitment and show their determination to elect politicians and administrators who will act forcefully to phase out fossil fuels and expedite the transition to renewable energy. For this paradigm shift to occur, a large majority of the electorate must believe that climate change is real and that there is no doubt about the science.
