Abstract

My scientific life began when, as a 17- to 18-year-old medical student in Melbourne, I became enthused by the brain-mind problem, in particular as it related to my own experienced self-consciousness. I read avidly all the philosophical and psychological texts available, and came to the conclusion that there was a plethora of dogmatism superimposed on a most inadequate scientific base. At that time it seemed to me that the specialized connections between nerve cells, the synapses, contained the clue not only to the subtlety of the nervous reactions, but even to the problems of brain and mind. I had come under the spell of the synapse!
