Birth assignment
Birth assignment, also calledgender assignment orassigned gender at birth (abbreviatedAGAB), refers to assigning agender to an infant based on their designatedsex at birth, which is usually based only on the appearance of their external genitalia.[1] Birth assignments are recorded as "sex" on birth certificates[2] with the assumption that an individual's eventualgender identity will match their birth assignment—assigned male at birth (AMAB) or assigned female at birth (AFAB).[1] People whose gender identity aligns with their birth assignment arecisgender;[3]transgender people have a gender identity that differs from their assigned gender at birth.[1] This practice also ignores natural sexual variations, such as variousintersex traits, or treats those variations as problems to be "fixed".[4]
