Shakes plods about his duties as party clown, and uses all of his free time getting seriously drunk. Binky, another clown, wins the spot on a local kiddie show, which depresses Shakes even more, and his boss threatens him with unemployment if he can't get his act under control.

First of all, I had forgotten how much screen time Adam Sandler has in this. He’s an actual co-star!
I feel fondly towards this movie, although it still falls under the category of “more interesting than successful” for me. Mind you, there are a lot of “successful” movies that are less memorable and distinctive than this, which is why terms like “good” and “bad” are not always useful when discussing art. The idea of an alcoholic clown is the sort of thing a child comes up with when they’re first playing around with dark humour, right alongside “What if Barney the Dinosaur got killed??” and “Imagine if I said all the swear words in a row!” But unlike the similarly…
There are a lot of clowns in this movie. Clearly we’re meant to laugh at the mere concept of a world where clowns are so numerous they’re practically an ethnic group.
And you know what? I did! Especially when I thought about my old roommate who hated clowns. I wish I could have seen this movie with him. It would have broken him.
Martin Scorsese called this "the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies" and I really don't know if I could give a better review or synopsis than that.
Why are there so many god damn clowns in this???

Combines two of the most amusing things - clowns & a life wrecking dependency on alcohol.
Good evening and welcome fellow Children of Chaos.

What's an unfunny comedy? Unbearable.
Now I generally like Bobcat Goldthwaite , he's like Gilbert Gottfried but lesser. But Gottfried is a fucking national treasure and I'll hear nothing otherwise.
But here Bobcat is so restrained and bland. Like he lacks the energy he carried with so much of his stand up stuff.
Honestly the only thing to mention here is the names attached and how little they are used.
I have nothing, this might have been the longest 87 minutes I've spent since The Curse of La Llarona.
arthouse
Overwhelming in its bleak humor, this film is apparently a satire of the stand up comedy scene of its time, but without that context, it just comes off as mean-spirited. The humor is occasionally charming (the jumping), occasionally offensive (a prison rape joke), occasionally absurd (background jokes). It's a mixed bag, but everything is in the shadow of this disturbing setting where birthday clowns, rodeo clowns, and mimes are a staple of society and no one is happy.

Bizarro fever dream nonsense from Bobcat here, an absurdist noir where clowns just kick it together and snort drugs and get framed for murder. A lot of the jokes don't land, but the whole affair is so tonally insane and has such fun cameos that I was never bored. Kenny and Williams are highlights; every time they are on screen, the movie completely comes to life.

Just a wild and goofy 87 minute ride. Not a great movie by any means; it’s a little slow to get moving and even at 87 minutes it feels a tad long, but when the comedy rolls around it’s usually worth it.
🤡🍾 ➡️ If you want to see a group of all kinds of clowns splitting each other with alcohol and cigarettes in hand, in the midst of love conflicts, welcome to this show.
Will you recognize any of the actors?

There are some fun ideas and worldbuilding at play, but Bobcat doesn't quite have a handle on the whole directing thing yet, which means a good joke will often get lost in some sloppy pacing or editing. The one idea I loved was that Shakes was a worthless drunk of a human being, but an amazing clown with impossible kung-fu like skills.
Man, even indie comedy clown movies used to have a textured feel to them. There's life within every frame. If this had been shot digitally, it would be DOA.
