Not sure I have the words to describe this movie. It's not a bad movie despite some of the reviews I've seen. Not really as bleak as described either, maybe that's the Bergman fan in me. Gibson and Keaton are good, but I wish Modine had been a bit better. The characters are a bit hard to like, but that's just the story. I guess it could be a romance movie, but that maybe a little morbid. Probably a hard watch for many.

the average rating on here is so disgraceful because this is such a beautiful bittersweet love story and it was soooo sexy and i’m in love with every single minute of this film and it will forever be a top favorite movie of mine! 💗

A deliberately dour period (1901) melo of forbidden love.Diane Keaton plays a horned up faith peddling bible thumping prison warden’s wife who has taken a shine to a death row inmate in the Allegheny County Jail (Mel Gibson in peak physical appeal). In look this film is a complete 180 degree turn fromGillian Armstrong’s prior film the pastel and neon hued new wave/pop semi-musicalStarstruck set in contemporary Sydney - here the beautifully rendered images of snowy Pennsylvania and Ontario are various shades of soot (the great Aussie DP andPeter Weir film regularRussell Boyd (Picnic at Hanging Rock!) miraculously shot both). Keaton is rather mysterious and marvelous in the film, and you can see in a…

    1984 In Review - December

Diane Keaton stars as a prison warden's wife who falls in love with a death row convict (Mel Gibson.) Believing he's innocent, she helps him and his convicted brother escape.

Based on a true story of two death-row imprisoned brothers about to be hanged, and then rescued by the warden's wife... the titular character played by Diane Keaton, these convicted killers have very little interesting about them, including a miscast Mel Gibson and an underused Matthew Modine. I didn’t for one minute believe in the love affair between Mel Gibson and Diane Keaton and that makes the whole film fail for me, plus it’s a very ugly looking film.

compelling chronicle of how Pittsburghers had to entertain themselves by romancing convicts in the days before Steeler Sundays and driving slow through tunnels

This was quite good. Based on a true incident in 1902 Pittsburgh, it's set in a federal prison where the wife of the warden (Diane Keaton) helps two brothers (Mel Gibson and Matthew Modine) convicted of murder and robbery, escape before their execution. She falls in love with one brother and joins them as they flee.

It's just as much a feminist saga as an adventure film. Not surprisingly, it's directed by the talented Australian director Gillian Anderson. Diane Keaton is great in her role, and the period details are wonderful. The first half of the film (before the prison break) shows how stifling life was for women in that period - she is treated as a child by her…

I got a lot of joy from seeing Matthew Modine sleeping on a couch with a baby kitten.

This is by far Ms. Keaton’skinkiest movie yet and now my favorite!
I mean, I’ve never been much into Mel Gibson but even I almost said “Yes Daddy!” at 01:13:38 when he gave that look and said “you comin with us?”💦💦
… and at 045:36 when he says read your bible! And grabs the saw from under her dress 💦

01:44:22- I am not kidding when I say Ms. Keaton put the fear of God in us all when when she is walked back into the prison towards the movie ending. The darkness in the hallway was perfect over her midnight blue ensemble bringing us to the coldness and anger in her eyes.

The mini hat with fascinator 🔥🔥🔥…

Gillian Armstrong made a romantic period piece in Pittsburgh starring Diane Keaton? I was always gonna enjoy this. It prominently and appropriately features the bridge of sighs, a shot of the old Heinz factory, a section in Butler, and the goal of heading to Erie, PA. I'm surprised no one talks about this, it's pretty interesting. Solid performances by a really nice cast and more going for it than your run of the mill period piece or prison escape film.

I think this movie was woefully misunderstood when it came out, and reviewed mostly by men.

  • Zoe Diaz

It seemed like a compelling film but the movie was so dark, I barely saw anything. So, it was a darkness I kind of liked.
