All Dogs Go to Heaven

Directed byDon Bluth

Synopsis

But not all dogs stay there!

When a casino-owning dog named Charlie is murdered by his rival Carface, he finds himself in Heaven basically by default since all dogs go to heaven. However, since he wants to get back at his killer, he cons his way back to the living with the warning that doing that damns him to Hell. Once back, he teams with his old partner, Itchy, to prep his retaliation. He also stumbles onto an orphan girl who can talk to the animals, thus allowing him to get the inside info on the races to ensure his wins to finance his plans. However, all the while, he is still haunted by nightmares of what's waiting for him on the other side unless he can prove that he is worthy of Heaven again.

One of the best movies about criminal organizations run by dogs set in New Orleans.

They just don’t make kids movies about angel dogs falling from heaven to get revenge for their wrongful murder like they used to.

featuring dante from the devil may cry series

me, every time that alligator starts singing: *jontron voice* for the first time in my life i'm just... i'm fucking speechless

So just a little reminder, if you’re really sad and crying that your dog passed away…

I suggest putting this on to cheer you up, it’ll make you think that your dog is always up there.

JUNIMATION

After seeing the movie's cover at multiple video stores—including this small one beneath the plaza where my mom used to go to the beauty salon—I thought it was finally time to watch this movie with one of the lowkey great movie titles out there.

Unfortunately, the film does not live up to its title. As usual, Bluth proves that he isn't afraid to tackle quite dark and mature issues in a film aimed for children. This, like in "American Tail," is mixed in with some of the kid-friendly material offered by the film's orphanage subplot. The animation has this... I don't know what to call it. It's not very smooth, but it's not that awful, either. The voice work…

My dog passed today. Was emotionally and physically sore after I dug his grave, and wanted something comforting, and dog related, to put on. Probably haven’t seen this since a pre-Kindergarten VHS, but Bluth’s imagery has stayed with me practically my whole life, so why not go back to the well. The wells came up alright. Just what I needed.

This is surprisingly classical (Cabin in the Sky meets a gangster picture), also really good. You can’t keep a good dog down

I didn't remember much about this except a few key sequences and that it was sad. I kept being distracted by how they couldn't decide if Charlie should be an anthropomorphic dog or just a dog, and sometimes, he would be far too human but with disproportionate dog limbs. It was disturbing, uncanny at times.

Also, I did not much like the music.

But when Bluth and company wanted to be intentionally disturbing, they got it right: the drag queen alligator, the nightmare of hell, the dog-dragon Satan. (And they got the pizza right, too - it looked gooey and amazing.)

I don't remember this film being quite as crazy when i was little. From what I gather, they are in possible 1930s New Orleans except at one point Carface has a ray gun?!

You have to applaud a film that kills off its protagonist in a grusome way within ten minutes. And then makes him actually not that good of a dog for most of the film!

Also, there is a bit where Charlie gets dragged down to hell which is pretty scary.

Ann-Marie is so cutesy it makes my teeth hurt, but despite all of this I still love this film!

This movie should have been called Some Dogs Are Emotionally Manipulative Assholes: Who Let Burt Sing?
