Heather Variava was sworn in as the U.S. Ambassador to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic on January 19, 2024. She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister Counselor. Previously, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Philippines.

Michelle Y. Outlaw arrived as Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy Vientiane in August 2023. She joined the U.S. Department of State in June of 2005. Michelle has served twice in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK), and has also had assignments in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Muscat, Oman; and Casablanca, Morocco.
