Egg Punk vs. Chain Punk refers to a series ofexploitable comparison charts depicting versions of egg punks and chain punks. The terms "chain punk" and "egg punk" represent polarities within a certain sub-genre of punk music but has since branched off withinmemes to represent sub-genres of other categories. Although the definitions of these terms are somewhat unclear, "chain punk" generally refers to punk in the edgier or traditional sense while "egg punk" evokes a softer, goofier or more off-center character.

Origin

On August 7th, 2017, the earliest known example of an egg punk vs. chain punk meme was posted byInstagram user memelifecrew.^[1] The four-panel image, a variation ofPeter Parker's Glasses features two differingphotoshopped each paired with drawings that include either chains or an egg.

Spread

On July 10th, 2018, Instagram user memelifecrew posted an image made by user _xanaxl_rose_2000 of a diagram that places various DIY bands on a spectrum between "chain punk" and "egg punk."^[2] The post gained 350 likes within the first month.

This post triggered a surge in related memes on Instagram. On July 16th, Instagram user wombat_84 posted a photo-shoppedexpanding brain meme with "egg," "chain," and "yogurt" panels in the right column (shown below, left).^[3] The post gained 104 likes within two weeks. On July 23rd, Inzane_Johnny Instagram user and member of experimental band Wolf Eyes, posted a four-panel image pairing Dice Clay with a photo of a chain and Emo Phillips with a fried egg (shown below, right).^[4] The image gained 1,451 likes in a week.

Many people debated the difference between "chain punk" and "egg punk" over various social media platforms while some created playlists labeled "Egg Punk" and "Chain Punk" in an attempt to make sense of the categories.^[5]

On July 28th, 2018, John Mayer posted an image to his Instagram story that read "I AM 100% EGG PUNK" (shown below).^[6]
