The ASN Publications Portfolio (JASN,CJASN,Kidney360, andASN Kidney News) offers 2-year editorial training programs for early-career scientists. Participants gain hands-on experience with the editorial process while working closely with editor mentors and contributing their expertise to the editorial teams.

The ASN journals,CJASN, JASN, andKidney360, recognize and honor the outstanding work of junior colleagues in their early stages of nephrology careers by awarding Trainee of the Year awards. Each journal awards a prize annually. This prize contest recognizes the best article submitted to each journal by a trainee as the first author.

Requirements


  1. ​​The first author must b​e a Trainee, defined as: Fellow, Graduate Student, Postdoctoral Fellow, Resident,or Student
  2. The research must be original and conducted by the Trainee.
  3. The Trainee must be an ASN member at the time of manuscript submission (free for Trainees).
  4. The article must be submitted during training or within 6 months after completion of the training program.*

*Extension: Up to 12 additional months (total 18 months) allowed for childbirth occurring in the last year of training or within 6 months post-training.​

Guidelines​
  1. ​​Previous prize recipients are not eligible to compete again.
  2. During submission, the author must select “Trainee of the Year” under Additional Information in the online submission form.
  3. Manuscripts will bereviewed to confirm all eligibility criteria are met.
Criteria
​1. Significance (Primary Consideration): Evaluation of how much thestudy advances the field of nephrology.

2. Internal and External Validity:

  • Assessment of the rigor and reliability of the study design and results.
  • Consideration of how well the findings can be generalized beyond the study sample.

3. Quality of Writing:

  • Clarity in describing research methods.
  • Clear and effective presentation of results.
  • Strength of the discussion, including contextualizing the study findings within current knowledge in nephrology.

 Prizes


Each winner will receive:
  1. $750 cash prize
  2. Articlepagefees reimbursed/waived
  3. Announcement at Kidney Week*
  4. Certificate presentedat the annual Editorial Board Luncheon at Kidney Week*
  5. Letterfrom the journal’s Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to the trainee’s Department Head and/or Division Chief
  6. Podcast feature study highlights discussion (participation highly encouraged but optional)
​​The ASN journals encourage all applicants to separately submit an abstract on the same original research topic for consideration at Kidney Week following the “Call for Abstracts." (Note: poster acceptance cannot be guaranteed.)​



CJASN Trainee Peer Review Program


This 
provides nephrology trainees in the United States and Canada with experience in peer review during their fellowship training. To gain experience, trainees work with faculty mentors from enrolled institutions to review manuscripts and craft constructive feedback.
