Safari（サファリ）は、Appleにより開発されているウェブブラウザ。レンダリングエンジンのWebKitを初めとするオープンソースソフトウェアをベースにしており、Mac標準搭載のウェブブラウザとして過去のInternet Explorer for MacやNetscape Navigatorを置き換える形で登場した。macOS、iOS、iPadOS、VisionOSに対応しており、2007年から2012年まではWindows版も提供されていた。

Safariは2003年のMac OS X v10.3と共に正式版が登場し、以降macOSのメジャーアップデートに合わせて最新版が公開されており、2024年現在はバージョン18が最新版となっている。

開発の経緯

1997年、Appleはマイクロソフトが提供するInternet Explorer for Macを5年間Macの標準搭載のブラウザとする契約を交わしていた。この契約が満了となる2002年当時、ウェブブラウザ市場はWindows向けに登場していた最新のInternet Explorer 6がシェアをほぼ独占する一方、Mac向けのInternet Explorerはバージョンが5で据え置かれ、時代遅れとなっていた。Internet Explorerの競合としてはNetscape（およびそのオープンソース版の Mozillaスイート）が有力視されており、機能面やウェブ標準への対応などで巻き返しを図っていたが動作速度で劣り、市場シェアを取り戻すには至っていなかった。こうした状況のなか、Appleは新たなブラウザを独自開発し、標準ブラウザを置き換えてマイクロソフトによる市場支配から脱却する必要に迫られていた。

2003年1月にMac OS X v10.2で動作する最初のベータ版が公開されたSafariは、そのレンダリングエンジンとしてNetscape（Mozillaスイート）で使われているGeckoではなく、まだ無名だったKonquerorのエンジンであるKHTMLをベースに開発された「WebKit」を搭載したことで話題を呼んだ。発表当初のSafariは最速のブラウザを謳い、ウェブ標準のサポートを売りにし、当時としては斬新だったツールバー統合のGoogle検索やポップアップ広告ブロック機能を搭載するなど、Appleは技術面・機能面での先進性をアピールし、Macのウェブブラウザ環境のイメージ改善を図った[2]。実際、Safariは画像に埋め込まれたカラープロファイリングを使った正確な色空間の描画に先んじて対応し、CSSについてもAcid2テストに最初期（2005年4月[3]）に合格し、正式版としてではないがAcid3テストにおいても開発版のWebKit r31356（最初のスコア100は、r31342）が最初に合格するWebブラウザとなるなど[4]、同時期の他のウェブブラウザの中でも一二を争う描画の正確性を誇っていた。また、JavaScriptに関してはKJSを前身とするJavaScriptCoreフレームワークを中核に備えていたことがブラウザの高速動作に一役買っていた。

Safariは2003年6月に正式版が公開され、同年10月に登場したMac OS X v10.3からは標準ブラウザとなった。以降、2024年現在に至るまでmacOSの標準ブラウザとなっている。Appleが標準ブラウザの独自開発に成功したことで、結果的にmacOSやその派生となるiOSは、WindowsにおけるIEコンポーネントに匹敵する強力なブラウザエンジンを内包することになった。

iPhone版とiPad版

2007年に発売されたiPhoneや、2010年のiPadでも当初から標準ブラウザとなっている。iPhone版およびiPad版Safariは外部プラグインをサポートせず、特に代表的なプラグインであるAdobe Flash Playerが利用できなかったことは物議を醸した。これは当時のFlashが広告や動画コンテンツの表示技術として独占的な地位にあり、事実上全てのブラウザに必須と見做されていたためだが、結果的にSafariのこの方針がFlashの独占に風穴を開け、オープンな代替技術であるHTML5への移行を促す役割を果たすことになった[5]。需要が減少したAdobe Flash Playerはその後2020年に開発が終了し、macOS版Safariを含む全てのウェブブラウザから排除されている[6]。

他のウェブブラウザとの関係

Safariの登場後、Mozillaは動作速度に劣るとされていたMozillaスイートから、当時は実験的なプロジェクトの一つだった軽量・高速なブラウザである「Phoenix」に開発の軸足を移すことになった。この方針転換にはAppleがGecko採用を見送ったことが影響している[7]。Phoenixはその後Mozilla Firefoxと改称され、2004年に正式版が登場した。

2008年に登場したGoogle Chromeは当初Safariと同じWebKitをレンダリングエンジンとして採用し、Safariとの高い互換性を保っていたが、2013年にGoogleによってWebKitから分岐したBlinkに移行してからは競合関係となっている。

2023年5月のStatCounterの調査によれば、Safariはデスクトップ用ウェブブラウザの中で11.87%の利用シェアを持ち、66.13%のChromeに次いで世界で2番目に人気のあるブラウザとなっており、Microsoft Edgeの11%、Firefoxの5.65%を上回っている[8]。

歴史

  • 2003年
    • 1月7日にApple ComputerがSafariのベータ版を発表。
    • 6月24日に公式版1.0を発表。そのすぐ後、マイクロソフトはInternet Explorer for Macの開発を中止すると発表した。
    • 10月24日に発売されたMac OS X v10.3には、バージョン 1.1 (v100) を搭載。Safariが標準のブラウザ、Internet Explorer for Macは代替ブラウザという位置づけになった。
      • Mac OS X v10.2.8向けの最終バージョンは1.0.3、Mac OS X v10.3.9向けの最終バージョンは1.3.2。これらの2つは2007年末までにサポートが終了している。
  • 2005年4月29日に発売されたMac OS X v10.4には、バージョン2.0 (v412) を搭載。初のメジャーバージョンアップであり、RSSリーダーなどの機能が追加されている。
  • 2007年6月11日にWindows版Safariの開発が発表された。同時にMac OS X、Windowsプラットフォーム対応、Safari 3.0 (v522.11) のパブリックベータが公開された。Safariのウェブブラウザ市場占有率の向上を狙った投入であり、AppleのWindows版ソフトウェアはQuickTime、iTunesに続き3本目となる[9]。
  • 2008年3月18日、Mac OS X v10.5.2、Mac OS X v10.4.11、Windows XP、Windows Vista向けにSafari 3.1 (525.13) が公開された[10]。
  • 2009年
    • 2月24日にAppleがSafari 4ベータ版を発表[11][12]。
    • 6月9日にAppleがSafari 4の正式版を発表。β版の不具合の修正、日本語を含む表示言語の追加や、タブ表示に変更がされている。
      • Mac OS Xでは、リリースされてきたSecurity UpdateにSafariに関係するセキュリティ修正が多数含まれてきたが、必ずしもWebCoreのバージョンが上がっている訳ではない[13][14]。
  • 2010年6月7日に、Safari 5が発表された。サードパーティーの機能拡張をサポート、ページ内の広告などを非表示にできるSafariリーダーの搭載、検索オプションにBingの追加、GeolocationやWebSocketを始めとしたHTML5の対応強化、JavaScriptのパフォーマンスが30%向上、開発者用ツールの改善など。
  • 2011年7月20日、WebKit2を採用したSafari 5.1が公開。サンドボックス化し、WebProcess.appで、Safari本体とWeb描画のプロセスを分けた。
  • 2012年
    • 3月12日、Safari 5.1.4が公開。StagedFrameworks利用によるサンドボックスの改良。
    • 7月26日、OS X Mountain LionのリリースとともにSafari 6が公開。しかしWindows向けのバージョンは用意されず、旧バージョンのダウンロードもサポートページからしかできなくなった。
    • 10月23日、情報処理推進機構はセキュリティホールが存在するためWindows向けSafariの使用停止を勧告した[15]。
  • 2013年10月22日、OS X MavericksのリリースとともにSafari 7が公開。ウィンドウやタブごとに個別プロセス化。共有リンクやキーチェーンなど多くの機能を追加し、パフォーマンスやバッテリー効率を向上。旧バージョン向けにはSafari 6.1が公開。
  • 2014年10月16日、OS X YosemiteのリリースとともにSafari 8が公開。
  • 2015年9月30日、OS X El Capitanのリリースとともに、MavericksやYosemite向けも含め、Safari 9がリリースされた。
  • 2016年9月20日、macOS Sierraのリリースとともに、YosemiteやEl Capitan向けも含め、Safari 10がリリースされた[16]。
  • 2017年9月26日、macOS High Sierraのリリースとともに、El CapitanやSierra向けも含め、Safari 11がリリースされた[17]。
  • 2018年9月17日、macOS Mojaveのリリースとともに、SierraやHigh Sierra向けも含め、Safari 12がリリースされた[18]。
  • 2019年9月20日、macOS MojaveとHigh Sierra向けに、Safari 13がリリースされた。レガシー機能拡張は動作しない[19]。
  • 2020年9月16日、macOS CatalinaとMojave向けに、Safari 14がリリースされた[20][21]。macOS Big SurおよびiOS/iPadOS 14にも含まれている[20]。

  • 2024年3月、Safari 17.4リリース、JITやマルチプロセスを見直したことで高速化し、インラインレイアウトエンジンを刷新して縦書き表示にも対応した[29]。
  • 2024年9月16日、macOS SonomaとVentura向けに、Safari 18がリリースされた[30][31]。macOS Sequoia, iOS/iPadOS 18にも含まれている[30]。
  • 2025年6月9日、WWDC25にて、 67の新機能と107の改良が加わるSafari 26開発が発表された[32]。
