会期終了日は各会期の初めに設定される。前の総会での決定あるいは加盟国過半数の要請に従って別の場所で開かれている場合を除き、国連本部（ the Headquarters of the United Nations ）で開かれる。総会は、総会を一時的に休会したり後日再開したりすることを、いかなる総会においても決定できる。
1950年の「平和のための結集決議」（総会決議377）に基づき、安全保障理事会の9か国の賛成投票による要請、または、加盟国の過半数の要請により、事務総長が各加盟国を招集し24時間以内に「緊急特別会期（emergency special session ）」を開くことができる[3]。これは、総会が開かれていない時期に「平和に対する脅威」、「平和の破壊」、または、「侵略行為」が発生し、かつ、それにもかかわらず安全保障理事会がその責務を果たしていない場合（e.g. ある常任理事国が自国や同盟国の擁護のため拒否権を発動し適切な安保理決議が不可能に見える場合）において要請できるものである。これまでに、11回の緊急特別会期が設定されている。
