The Intercontinental and European Championships were WWE’s major mid-card titles between 1997 and 2002. A wrestler who held both titles simultaneously was credited as Euro-Continental Champion. During that five year period, only four wrestlers held the Intercontinental and European Championships at the same time.

D’Lo Brown

D’Lo Brown was the first wrestler to ever hold the European and Intercontinental Championships simultaneously. Brown captured his third European belt at Fully Loaded on July 25, 1999. The next night on Raw, he defeated Jeff Jarrett to win the Intercontinental Championship.

The former Nation of Domination member’s reign as Euro-Continental Champion would be short-lived, however. Both titles were on the line in a featured bout at SummerSlam, wherein Jarrett defeated Brown for both titles.

Brown would never hold the Intercontinental Title again, but he did regain the European Championship several weeks later.

Jeff Jarrett

Jeff Jarrett was a prolific Intercontinental Champion. ‘Double J’ was a five-time title-holder when he dropped the belt to D’Lo Brown on the July 26, 1999 Raw.

Incensed by his loss, Jarrett insisted on a re-match with Brown, who also held the European Championship. Both titles were put on the line in a featured bout at SummerSlam on August 22, 1999. In said bout, Jarrett upended Brown to win the Intercontinental and European Championship after Brown’s buddy, Mark Henry turned on him.

However, Jarrett’s reign as Euro-Continental Champion would be even shorter than Brown’s. ‘Double J’ gifted the European Title to Henry as a thank you for his assistance at SummerSlam, the next night on Raw. He dropped the Intercontinental Championship to Chyna at No Mercy on October 17, 1999.

Infamously, that bout occurred one day after Jarrett’s WWE contract expired. Jarrett demanded (and received) a six figure sum to lose the title to ‘The Ninth Wonder of the World.’ He jumped ship to WCW, and made his debut on Monday Nitro, the next night.

Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle’s ascent up the WWE ladder was an incredible feat. In less than 10 months, Angle accrued multiple titles before capturing the WWE Championship from The Rock at No Mercy 2000.

‘The Olympic Hero’ tasted his first gold in WWE when he upended Val Venis to win the European Title on the February 10, SmackDown. Two weeks later at No Way Out, Angle also captured the Intercontinental Title from Chris Jericho. With those victories, Angle was crowned Euro-Continental Champion. The Olympian would hold both titles until WrestleMania 2000 on April 2.

In a specially stipulated two fall Triple Threat bout, Angle lost both titles without being pinned or submitted. His opponents Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho defeated each other instead. Benoit pinned Jericho to win the Intercontinental Championship and ‘Y2J’ pinned Benoit to lift the European strap.

Angle’s run as Euro-Continental Champion was over. However, the ‘Wrestling Machine’ would bounce back by winning the 2000 King of the Ring in June and capturing the WWE World crown in October.

Rob Van Dam

Rob Van Dam was the final European Champion in WWE history. He is also the last ever wrestler to be recognised as Euro-Continental Champion. Intercontinental Champion, RVD and the reigning European Champion, Jeff Hardy clashed in a Ladder Match on the July 22, 2002 Raw. That bout was fought to unify the two titles.

RVD proved victorious and the European Championship was retired immediately following the contest. That meant ‘Mr Monday Night’ was also the shortest reigning European and Euro-Continental Champion of all time.
