You have to download java. Then you can open a terminal, make sure you're in the same directory as the jar file and run the command:
java -jar desktop-pets.jar

yes you can download pictures from the internet, but you have to navigate to where you saved them when you selecting an image for a new pet

Yes, you just have to create a png file and navigate to it when you are selecting a new pet's image.
