Same thing they do in the video game development forums, and go "Here's my project, here's where it's at, the input I want is thus-and-so, I'll update as it develops".
Basically, public design and development threads. Which...
Like, on the one side, those can get awful market-ing-y, for sure, especiallyif they keep being updated post-release, which is contrary to keeping marketing in the stickies.
But at the same time, we seem to have a LOT of subforums for design, which suggests the expectation of a lot of threads on design for each subtype, which makes me go "Maybe project development threads up to the point of release are intended to be a thing?"
I took a look at the video game devlogs. So here's what I would say: posting a thread asking for design feedback (with specific questions) or asking for help brainstorming, or putting forth a mechanic you're really proud of and want to discuss, etc. would definitely fit in the design forums. As the project progresses or the person implements the feedback, it seems to make sense to continue to ask questions and share in the same thread for that project.
However, a lot of the devlogs I looked at in video games were "here's my project and I'm posting updates as I go" which seems like a better fit for the devlog function built into itch.io or fell very much in the "self-promo" side of things.
I'd say it comes down to intent: is the thread seeking to have a conversation around the design, or seeking to show it off? Conversation and feedback is awesome; showing off a project is better placed in the "Share Your Projects" stickies.
Does that make sense?
Nice to see this space here! A bit of feedback on the Play portion of the PbF board; you might want to have two separate boards there- one for planning a game, and one for playing it. Helps people to see what kinds of games are on the blocks, so to speak, and to gauge interest in a game before spinning up a thread.
I should have read the LFG thread first- I thought it was just for Looking for a Group, not for IC's also.
I'm noticing something happening in this section that reminds me of a similar event that happened when I was managing the Beamdog forums: the number of stickied threads makes it harder to see individual discussions. I don't have a concrete suggestion for how to remedy that (except maybe to create a "Reference" category/subcategory? idk), but right now there are only three or four discussion threads in this section that aren't stickied, and on my machine I have to scroll down to see them.
(At Beamdog, we unstickied threads once they were no longer needed. But this forum is so new that I don't think that's appropriate here.)
Not sure of the policy on this, but you might want to put some time limit on deleting posts (and even perhaps editing). In a recent spat, a user deleted all of their posts, and the conversation doesn't flow as well with the posts removed. I know that some forums impose limits on such actions to prevent this type of behavior.
I'm not sure if the Help Wanted / offered section is the best place for these sort of things but I'm curious about I have this idea and I need some feedback or I have this game but I'm concerned about this issue. Something where creators could ask for feedback or get discussion about their idea. The help-wanted seems a little bit more official but maybe that's what it's for anyway and I'm just missing the point. Am I?
Depending on what you're asking about, I'd say Theory (for more generalized and broad topics) or one of the subcategories for a specific system under Design would be the perfect place for you. Help Wanted is more intended for looking for, say, a layout artist, writer, or sensitivity consultant. Hope that helps!
I recently learned that there IS a tabletop presence here and I feel less bed about my stuff!
I didn't notice a Shadowrun section, but where would I post my Roll20 tokens? I originally made them for our own game but that fell apart a few years ago so now I'd be happy if anyone got any use out of these. I'm also making more for that explicit purpose.
