Opengl is indeed the problem. But I got it to run by using mesa3d. Which basically does all the rendering in software.

Thanks for the idea, I hadn't thought of forcing software rendering, in my case on Linux, it works if I run it from a terminal like this:LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 ./4ed
