Glad that it worked!Donna can wield staffs. You can buy one in the shops of Eleen or Eowen.You will also loot one when meeting Terra.
I don't know why that never occurred to me to try. Maybe I hadn't discovered the "weapon compatibility check" (Z key iirc)
