I love the retro look and feel. Maybe a more dynamic camera as some others have mentioned or maybe a "danger" indicator if that path will transition to a monkey would help balance the difficulty a little bit.
This is really difficult! I could only ever get a couple batteries before I died. The apes also kept getting me during/after screen transitions, which seems a little unfair. The graphics and sound were cute!
I liked it. Sort of like Pac Man. Doing a maze game like this in such a small resolution is hard. I think I might have ramped up the difficulty more slowly by starting with fewer batteries. I liked the ape sound effects!
Nice. Only thing that I would change is make camera dynamically follow the player for better awareness of the situation. Funny but my own game is a bit similar, especially in the name: Escape from Zone 64 :-)
