Al posto delle retrocesseBurnley ,Hull City ePortsmouth sono saliti dallaChampionship ilNewcastle Utd , ilWest Bromwich e, dopo i play-off, ilBlackpool , dopo un'assenza di quasi 40 anni dalla massima serie inglese.
Il torneo iniziò bene per i detentori delChelsea che chiusero il mese di Agosto in testa e parvero lanciati verso la conferma. Ma una crisi invernale portò i londinesi lontani dal primo posto che divenne proprietà delManchester Utd . Nei primi mesi del torneo furono i cugini delManchester City ad essere i rivali più accreditati tanto che alla fine del 2010 le squadre erano appaiate in vetta alla classifica. Successivamente il City calò ed emerse l'Arsenal che però non fu mai in grado di impensierire seriamente gli uomini diSir Alex Ferguson . Nel finale provò una disperata rimonta il Chelsea che tuttavia venne sconfitto nello scontro diretto. Lo United si laureò campione con 2 giornate d'anticipo e ottenne il 19º titolo nazionale, un record.Il Chelsea che concluse secondo appena terminato il campionato esoneròCarlo Ancelotti , il Manchester City chiuse scavalcando l'Arsenal e si qualificò per la Champions League. IlTottenham centrò l'UEFA Europa League mentre ilLiverpool pagò la pessima prima parte di stagione disputata agli ordini diRoy Hodgson e chiuse solamente sesto nonostante un ottimo ruolino di marcia espresso quando in panchina tornò dopo 20 anniKenny Dalglish . In coda cadde ilWest Ham Utd dove brillòScott Parker che vinse, nonostante la retrocessione, il premio di miglior giocatore dell'anno.Cinque squadre giunsero all'ultima giornata in lotta per evitare di accompagnare i londinesi in Championship: il Blackburn si chiamò fuori dai giochi andando sopra per 3-0 sul campo del Wolverhampton; il Wigan, per tutto l'anno in zona retrocessione, espugnò il campo dello Stoke. Sperò il Blackpool, in vantaggio ad Old Trafford, ma poi travolto 4-2: iTangerines comunque stupirono la critica con il gioco propositivo proposto e lottando sino alla fine per la salvezza. Il Wolverhampton rimontò 2 reti al Blackburn e pur perdendo riuscì a ottenere la zona salvezza grazie al maggior numero di reti segnate, a parità di differenza reti, nei confronti del Birmingham. I vincitori dellaCoppa di Lega si gettarono dunque all'attacco cercando il gol salvezza ma fu invece il Tottenham, all'ultimo secondo, a segnare la rete che condannò la squadra della Second City alla sconfitta e alla conseguente retrocessione.
Il campionato mette a disposizione quattro posti per laUEFA Champions League e, in base agli esiti delle due coppe nazionali e alla classifica Fair Play, un solo posto per laUEFA Europa League .
