Clements Robert Markham Clements Robert Markham (Stillingfleet ,20 luglio 1830 –Londra ,30 gennaio 1916 ) è stato unesploratore ,geografo escrittore britannico .
Nel1844 entra nellaRoyal Navy dove partecipa alle ricerche dellaspedizione perduta di Franklin inArtide . Promosso tenente, si ritira dalla vita militare nel1851 .
Esplora lacordigliera delle Ande ed importa lacinchona (da cui si estrae ilchinino ) inIndia e nelle altre colonie britanniche. Impiantando piantagioni di cinchona inSri Lanka e lavorandovi dal1865 al1866 contribuisce a combattere lamalaria nell'Impero britannico .
Come membro dellaRoyal Geographical Society prende parte ad una spedizione nell'corno d'Africa .
Nel1874 si unisce aGeorge Nares per una delle sue spedizioni in Artide e lo accompagna sino allaGroenlandia e diventa presidente della Royal Geographical Society nel1893 .
Nel pieno dell'epoca eroica dell'esplorazione antartica 1895 -1922 ) organizza diverse raccolte di fondi, prima perRobert Falcon Scott e poi in favore diErnest Shackleton [ 1]
