Fu l'estensore della primacolonna sonorajazz per ilfilmUn tram che si chiama Desiderio (1951) e il primo a comporre una colonna sonora in musica moderna,Viva Zapata! (1952). Nato a Chester inPennsylvania, Alex North fu un autore di musica classica delXX secolo non indulgendo al classicismo delXIX. Fu un innovatore che seppe manipolare illeitmotiv delle sue partiture trasformandolo in musiche sempre diverse. Uno di questi divenne la famosissimacanzoneUnchained Melody. Ottenne la candidatura all'Oscar ben 15 volte senza mai vincerlo. Fu premiato con l'Oscar alla carriera nel 1986 e, insieme adEnnio Morricone (2007), è stato l'unicomusicista ad aver ricevuto questo riconoscimento speciale.
