Nato nell'Essex, inInghilterra, da Isobel e Peter Gaskarth, a 6 anni si trasferisce aBaltimora, nelMaryland.Ha tre fratellastri maggiori avuti dal primo matrimonio del padre: Jillian, Helen, e Tom, morto a soli 21 anni per cause dovute all'alcolismo quando Alex ne aveva 12. Questo fatto ha ispirato la canzoneLullabies, contenuta nell'album di debutto degliAll Time Low,The Party Scene.[3]
Durante un tour nel 2009, è caduto dal palco[4] e ha avuto una commozione cerebrale; successivamente è stato ricoverato in ospedale.
Il 9 aprile 2016 si sposa con la sua fidanzata storica del liceo Lisa Ruocco.[5]
