AFC East è ladivision orientale dellaAmerican Football Conference, nata nel1970 a seguito della fusione traAmerican Football League eNational Football League ed originariamente formatasi nel1960 comeEastern Division dellaAFL.
Attualmente ne fanno parte: iBuffalo Bills, iMiami Dolphins, iNew England Patriots e iNew York Jets.
La divisione originale contava 4 membri: i Bills, i Patriots (denominati dal 1960 al 1970 Boston Patriots), i New York Titans (che avrebbero cambiato nome in New York Jets nel1962) e gliHouston Oilers. A queste squadre si aggiunsero nel1966 iMiami Dolphins.
Nel 1970, a seguito della fusione tra AFL e NFL, ladivision venne assorbita quasi integralmente con la sola eccezione degli Oilers che vennero inseriti nellaAFC Central (precedentemente chiamataNFL Century Division, oraAFC North) e sostituiti daiBaltimore Colts, provenienti dallaNFL Coastal Division (che sarebbe poi divenuta laNFC West).
Nonostante il trasferimento aIndianapolis del1984, i Colts continuarono a far parte della AFC East fino alla riorganizzazione della NFL del2002, a seguito della quale furono inseriti nellaAFC South (in cui vennero inseriti anche i successori degli Oilers, iTennessee Titans).
Una particolarità delle squadre facenti parte della AFC East è che nessuna di loro gioca in uno stadio situato nella zona centrale della città che rappresenta:
