The Brandywine Valley offers a backdrop of unparalleled natural beauty and historical depth to the ISI campus. Hagley Museum and Library
Explore the 19th-century DuPont gunpowder works, original mills along the Brandywine River, and the first DuPont family home and gardens.

Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library
Visit the former DuPont family estate with an outstanding collection of American decorative arts, set on 1,000 acres of gardens and woodland.

Nemours Estate
A 77-room French chateau–style mansion with formal gardens, fountains, vintage cars, and extensive grounds.

Historic New Castle & Jessop’s Tavern
A short drive from Wilmington, New Castle has colonial streets, historic homes, and the old Jessop’s Tavern from the colonial era.

Fort Christina & Old Swedes’ Church
Fort Christina marks the site of the earliest Swedish settlement (1638) in the area. Adjacent is the Old Swedes’ Church, one of the oldest churches in Delaware.

Continental Army Encampment Site
The Continental Army camped in Brandywine Park before and after the Battle of Brandywine in 1777.

Rockford Park & Rockford Tower
This Olmstead-influenced historic park overlooks the Brandywine River and belongs to the National Register of Historic Places.

Longwood Gardens
Longwood Gardens, only minutes from Wilmington, is Pierre S. du Pont’s horticultural masterpiece: a world-renowned estate with over 1,000 acres of gardens, fountains, and conservatories.

Wilmington Friends Meetinghouse
Built in 1817, this meetinghouse played a key role in the abolitionist movement, with members like Thomas Garrett working alongside Harriet Tubman to aid freedom seekers via the Underground Railroad.
