BME Forum calls for volunteers to help Jamaica relief efforts

The Croydon BME Forum is appealing for volunteers to assist with its efforts as it co-ordinates the local response to the humanitarian crisis in Jamaica following Hurricane Meilssa.

Aftermath: much of Jamaica has been left devastated by Hurricane Melissa, which claimed 28 lives

It has been confirmed that 28 people died in Jamaica following one of the strongest storms on record to make landfall in the Caribbean, with winds reaching 185mph last week.

The Red Cross described it as a “disaster of unprecedented catastrophe”.

Much of the island’s infrastructure has been wrecked by the storm, leaving people without clean water, food or power.

Croydon BME Forum opened its office doors on Saturday to accept donations for those affected.

Working together with the Windrush Generation Legacy Association, they have also been in contact with the Jamaican High Commission, who have shared guidance on the key items urgently needed.

“Over the coming weeks, we will also need volunteers to assist in various roles as we coordinate this vital relief effort,” the Forum says.

Those who want to volunteer are asked to email info@bmeforum.org.Or click here for updates.

“Together, we can make a real difference.”
