A bit of clout: the residents at Whitgift House enjoyed a thumping success against the Foundation governors’ team
They play a mean game of croquet downat Whitgift House in South Croydon.
This week the residents of the nursing home, which nestles in the grounds of the large private school, handed out a bit of a drubbing to a team formed of the governors of the Whitgift Foundation, the charity which runs the home as well as the Croydon Almshouses.
The annual croquet match on the lawns is one of a series of events, including afternoon teas, picnics and garden parties staged at Whitgift House.

This one was notable for one of the first official engagements ofRev Michael Walcott, recently arrived from Barbados to take up the role as assistant chaplain to the Whitgift Foundation.
Also on the governors team for the first time was Fiona Fletcher-Smith, the new chair of governors.
The annual Residents v Governors croquet match is a long-standing tradition, normally held in September.
The Whitgift House residents play croquet through the summer months and this year have welcomed teams from the Foundation and other schools. The residents’ team also included some of the Almhouses’ residents.
This year’s game wasn’t even close: 29-21 to the residents, despite an autumnal deluge. “Rain did not stop play,” according to one slightly damp member of the governors’ team.
“It was genuinely a very nice evening, with a fish and chip supper in the community room afterwards.”
